Essential Functions

Deputy Sheriffs perform field and office law enforcement duties. As uniformed or non-uniformed officers, they patrol assigned areas; transport mentally ill persons to appropriate institutions; serve Court Orders; investigate violations of law; apprehend violators; gather and preserve evidence; appear as court witnesses; under Court Order, replevin property; carry out eviction procedures; collect delinquent taxes; conduct Sheriff's sales required by law; investigate accidents and render aid to the public; make reports; book, guard and transport prisoners as required by law and by the Sheriff; provide Court security and supervise civilian employees of the Sheriff's Office when necessary.

The work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property; for the prevention, detection and investigation of crime; and for maintaining law and order. The work involves an element of personal danger and may be performed either in plain clothes or in uniform. Specific assignments are received from superior officers and are carried out in accordance with established rules an procedures found in the General Orders of the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies must be able to act with good judgment without direct supervision in meeting emergencies. Work is reviewed through reports, inspections and observations of results obtained.
Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements

Education:
Candidate must have graduated from high school or must possess a certificate that certifies an educational development of at least a high school graduation level (G.E.D).

Character:
Must be of good character and must not have demonstrated a disregard of the law to such an extent that usefulness as an employee would be impaired.

If adverse information relative to a potential employee's character and/or background is developed during the course of the routine background investigation, the Sheriff will explore this during the oral interview and make the decision relative to hiring. Such decision must be consistent with Article V, Section G of the Merit Commission Rules.

Physical:
Vision of 20/200 uncorrected to 20/20 corrected; normal depth perception; no permanent or ocular abnormality including color blindness.

Any indication of organic, active or irreversible disease of the ear shall result in disqualification. Hearing must be such that the applicant can understandably receive frequencies of normal voice range.

Successful completion of a physical examination by a physician designated by the Commission.

Age:
Must have attained the age of 21 years at the time of certification from the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center.

License:
Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License at both the time of application and at the time hired.

The tentative testing date for the Deputy Sheriff's Physical Exam will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026. There will be no makeup days offered. The physical test consists of the Physical Readiness Entrance Test (PRET) in which an applicant will be required to meet the 30% standard in relation to Vertical Jump, Sit-ups, 300 Meter Sprint, Push-ups, and 1.5 mile run. The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), Reading and Language sections, will be offered on various dates the week prior to the physical test for applicants that have not already taken and passed the TABE exam.
