As the Deputy Division Leader, you will report to the Division Leader for Radiation Protection (RP) and serve as a senior member of the RP leadership team. The RP Division provides institutional radiation protection services that support worker health and safety, emergency response, regulatory compliance, and safe operability for active and legacy nuclear and radiological facilities across the Laboratory.
The Deputy Division Leader provides strategic and operational leadership for RP programs, workforce capability, resource planning, business execution, and stakeholder engagement. This role partners with Laboratory line, program, facility, safety, and regulatory organizations to ensure RP services are aligned with mission needs, Laboratory objectives, and disciplined operations expectations.
Successful candidate responsibilities include the following:
- Partner with the Division Leader and RP leadership team to develop and execute division strategy, priorities, operating plans, and communications.
- Provide senior-level leadership for institutional radiation protection services, including program implementation, technical capability development, operational readiness, and service delivery.
- Support staffing, funding, succession planning, mentoring, recruiting, retention, budget planning, and resource allocation for the RP workforce.
- Lead or sponsor cross-organizational initiatives that improve consistency, efficiency, integration, performance, and continuous improvement of RP programs and processes.
- Provide oversight for corrective actions, risk-informed decision making, and execution of division commitments in alignment with directorate and institutional goals.
- Represent RP in interactions with Laboratory organizations, DOE/NNSA, regulators, industry partners, and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Promote a work environment that reflects integrity, trust, accountability, teamwork, workforce engagement, and commitment to quality and excellence.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: Leadership: Demonstrated record of leading multi-disciplinary technical organizations or major programs, including experience developing people, building teams, setting priorities, and delivering results through others.
Radiation Protection Program Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of radiation protection principles, programs, and applicable requirements, DOE expectations, and associated policies or standards. Experience in applying these requirements in complex technical, nuclear, radiological, or high-hazard work environments is expected.
Strategic and Operational Management: Experience supporting strategic and tactical planning, business execution, resource planning, budget administration, project or program management, and organizational performance improvement.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement: Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage, influence, and collaborate with Laboratory leadership, workers, customers, DOE/NNSA, regulators, and other stakeholders.
Disciplined Operations and Facility Support: Knowledge of disciplined operations, work planning and control, hazard analysis, risk assessment, corrective action management, and safe execution of work in radiological, nuclear, or similarly complex facilities.
Policy, Compliance, and Decision Making: Experience interpreting requirements, evaluating options, and supporting sound, risk-informed decisions that balance mission execution, worker protection, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.
Cross-Organizational Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to resolve complex institutional or technical issues in partnership with senior leaders, peers, customers, and subject matter experts.
Culture and Continuous Improvement: Demonstrated commitment to safety, security, quality, human performance, workforce development and continuous improvement in programs and operations.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements.
Desired Qualifications: - Knowledge of Laboratory, DOE, NNSA, and other national programs relevant to the RP Division mission.
- Experience interacting effectively with other national laboratories, universities, industry partners, regulators, or government agencies.
- Familiarity with LANL organizational structure, technical areas, operations, facilities, and mission execution environment.
- Experience with project management, performance metrics, business systems, or continuous-improvement tools.
- Familiarity with Human Performance Improvement (HPI) concepts and application of HPI tools.
- Professional certification or registration relevant to radiation protection, health physics, nuclear operations, safety, or technical management.
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to speak, sit, stand, reach overhead, type or keyboard, and occasionally climb stairs and ladders.
Work Environment Work Environment: Occasional use of safety glasses or eye protection, safety shoes or protective footgear, hearing protection, and work in radiological facilities requiring dosimetry.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
