Description:

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chair, the Department Manager is responsible for management of the financial, human, space, IT, and physical resources and assets of the Department of English at the Faculty of Arts & Science. The Department Manager supports and advises the Chair on financial strategies for the department, develops, manages and monitors operating budget, forecasts revenues and spending and oversees administration of faculty research grants. The Department Manager ensures that business and administrative practices are consistent with University and Faculty policies and practices. The Department Manager leads and motivates administrative staff members and manages functions related to human resource management including assignment of work, hiring, performance management, and professional development of staff. The Manager is responsible for oversight and management of the Department's physical space, and IT equipment and needs. The Manager oversees departmental operations and broad management initiatives and works with the Chair to develop departmental strategic plans in alignment with the goals of the Faculty and the University and ensures administrative practices are in compliance with University policies and guidelines.

Qualifications Required:

Education:

  • University degree and accounting designation or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.


Experience:

  • Five years' relevant and progressive experience in financial management and administration, preferably in a University setting.
  • Experience working with and interpreting policies and procedures pertaining to budget, finance, physical and human resources, including payroll and academic administration.
  • Experience managing budgets and dealing with students and student funding issues.
  • Experience administering policies and collective agreements.
  • Experience supervising staff, preferably in a unionized environment.


Skills:

  • Highly proficient in use of MS Office software (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Outlook).
  • Experience working with FIS and HRIS or equivalent systems is essential.

  • Excellent administrative, analytical, problem solving and financial skills.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills including ability to foster confidence and motivation in staff and to develop cooperative, collegial working relationships with a broad range of University constituencies.
