General Function Under general supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean provides critical leadership for faculty members in their assigned program area at Brunswick Community College (BCC). This includes establishing strategic plans for the program area and working with chairs and faculty to determine goals for the upcoming year. In addition, the Dean maintains an operating budget, manages class scheduling, teaches an assigned class load, and serves as a faculty advisor. Deans are expected to participate in the governance of the College through committees and meetings, shared leadership within and across divisions, and make personnel recommendations to College administrators. The Dean will provide vision and leadership in an environment that embraces learning, positive spirit, high performance, integrity, and diversity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Provide leadership, promote collaboration and overall direction to both full-time and adjunct faculty within the program area.
- Commit to a student-centered and student-success learning environment and comprehensive community college mission.
- Lead strategic planning efforts for the division and participate in institutional planning initiatives.
- Supervise, evaluate, and support faculty and staff in accordance with College policies and procedures.
- Make recommendations regarding hiring, retention, professional development, and disciplinary actions for personnel within the division.
- Support faculty professional development and foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and excellence in teaching and learning.
- Coordinate and oversee program review, assessment of student learning outcomes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Analyze enrollment trends, retention, completion, and other student success metrics to inform planning and decision-making.
- Develop, coordinate, and monitor course schedules to ensure efficient use of faculty resources and to support student enrollment needs.
- Coordinate the annual program operating budget and track expenditures in key operational areas throughout each semester.
- Ensure compliance with College policies, state regulations, accreditation standards, and applicable program requirements.
- Resolve student, faculty, and instructional concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Collaborate with Student Services, Continuing Education, and other College departments to promote student success and support institutional goals.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with local schools, universities, business and industry representatives, and community organizations to support program growth and student opportunities.
- Participate in recruitment, retention, and outreach activities designed to promote enrollment and student success.
- Assist with grant development, implementation, and reporting activities as appropriate.
- Represent the division on College committees, task forces, and community or statewide initiatives as assigned.
- Complete all reports and participate in meetings with the VP of Academic Affairs and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Teach assigned class load, which may include a variety of course delivery methods.
- Serve as a faculty advisor and maintain office hours in accordance with procedures established by the VP of Academic Affairs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications - Master's degree in a relevant academic area of instruction within Arts and Sciences
- Three years of teaching experience at the postsecondary level
- Higher education supervisory experience (i.e. Department Chair, Division Chair, Program Director, Executive Director, Dean, etc.)
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic a must
- Effective working knowledge of personal computers, Internet, and email.
- Effective experience in working with students and faculty to address issues, concerns, and resolve conflicts
- Ability to interact in a professional manner and maintain effective working relationships with members of the Board of Trustees, College Administration, staff, students, and the general public
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population
Preferred Requirements - A minimum of three years' supervisory experience at the postsecondary level (i.e. Department Chair, Division Chair, Program Director, Executive Director, Dean, etc.)
- Working knowledge of the NC Community College System
- Experience using multiple data points to drive decision-making processes
