Team Lead: Database MIgration & Cloud AssessmentFull-time
Location: Remote, US-based. Will accomodate business meetings in the eastern time zone.
Position SummaryTekStream Solutions is seeking an experienced Team Lead to drive enterprise database migration engagements on AWS, with a secondary focus on delivering Optimization and License Assessment (OLA) engagements for clients evaluating cloud migration pathways. This is a client-facing, technically deep role operating at the intersection of Oracle and SQL Server database expertise, AWS architecture, and licensing strategy.
The primary responsibility (approximately 70%) is leading hands-on database migration workstreams - planning, executing, and validating the migration of Oracle and SQL Server databases to AWS-native targets including RDS, Oracle Database[redacted] (ExaCS), and Aurora PostgreSQL. The secondary responsibility (approximately 30%) is producing and presenting OLA deliverables: structured Excel workbooks, PowerPoint readouts, and Word narrative documents for enterprise clients evaluating VMware-to-AWS and database migration pathways.
You will serve as the technical lead on direct client engagements, owning the database and licensing track while coordinating with infrastructure, application modernization, and partner teams.
Primary ResponsibilitiesDatabase Migration Leadership (70%)- Lead end-to-end migration of Oracle databases from on-premises environments to AWS.
- Determine and validate migration targets per workload (RDS for Oracle/SQL Server, Oracle Database@AWS ExaCS, Aurora PostgreSQL, EC2 self-managed).
- Execute and oversee Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) and AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) workflows.
- Conduct Oracle feature usage audits (RAC, Partitioning, Advanced Compression, Diagnostics/Tuning Packs) to determine RDS eligibility and SE2 conversion feasibility.
- Perform PL/SQL complexity assessments for Oracle-to-PostgreSQL/Aurora migrations, including LOC analysis, Oracle-specific package identification, and effort estimation.
- Manage cutover weekends including go/no-go decisions, rollback procedures, and post-migration validation.
- Coordinate with AWS infrastructure and landing zone teams on networking and compute dependencies that gate database migrations.
- Align database migration timing with application modernization partners (e.g., middleware replacement, container cutover) to ensure coordinated Oracle license drop schedules.
- Maintain and enforce Oracle licensing compliance across migration phases - BYOL tracking, processor count validation, and management pack entitlements.
OLA Assessment Delivery (30%) - Produce complete OLA deliverable packages: 7-sheet Excel workbook, 10-slide executive PowerPoint, and 30+ page Word narrative.
- Ingest and normalize client data from RVTools exports (vInfo, vCPU, vMemory, vDisk), DBCSI CSV files, AWR reports, and OLA questionnaires.
- Perform VM-to-EC2 right-sizing analysis and map Oracle/SQL Server databases to optimal AWS targets across multiple pricing options (BYOL vs. License Included, RDS vs. EC2 vs. ExaCS).
- Build multi-option TCO and cost models (1-year and 3-year views) with cited unit economics from official AWS pricing sources.
- Document formal risks (R-series) and assumptions (A-series) in structured registers, flagging scope gaps before cost models are finalized.
- Present findings to client stakeholders including C-level executives, IT leadership, and project sponsors.
- Manage scope gap resolution - identifying unconfirmed VMs, possible RAC configurations, DNS aliases, and DR replica ambiguity before deliverable sign-off.
Required Technical SkillsOracle Database - Oracle Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition 2 - feature inventories, licensing rules, and migration blockers
- RAC (Real Application Clusters) architecture and its implications for RDS eligibility
- Oracle management packs: Diagnostics, Tuning, Partitioning, Advanced Compression
- AWR/ASH report interpretation for workload characterization and right-sizing
- Oracle RMAN, Data Guard, GoldenGate (familiarity required; hands-on preferred)
- PL/SQL proficiency; ability to assess and execute Oracle-to-PostgreSQL conversion feasibility
SQL Server - SQL Server 2014-2022 across Enterprise, Standard, and Web editions
- Feature audit methodology to determine RDS SQL Server compatibility
- BYOL vs. License Included cost modeling on EC2 and RDS
- Always On Availability Groups, mirroring, and replication - migration pathway implications
AWS Platform - Amazon RDS (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL)
- Oracle Database@AWS (ExaCS) - architecture, pricing, and use cases
- Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL - migration from Oracle and SQL Server
- AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) and Schema Conversion Tool (SCT)
- EC2 instance families for database workloads (r6i, m6i, c6i) and right-sizing methodology
- EBS volume types (gp3, io2) and IOPS/throughput configuration for database storage
- AWS Pricing Calculator, instances.vantage.sh, and Reserved Instance economics
OLA / Assessment Tooling - RVTools data analysis (vInfo, vCPU, vMemory, vDisk sheets)
- DBCSI output interpretation and cross-referencing against VM inventories
- Excel-based cost modeling: openpyxl, pandas, or native Excel formula authoring
- Python scripting for automated deliverable generation (python-docx, python-pptx)
- PowerPoint and Word deliverable creation to executive-grade standards
Required Professional Skills - Client-facing communication: ability to translate technical findings into executive-ready narratives
- Scope gap identification: proactively flags missing data and documents risks before committing to cost models
- Collaborative delivery: experienced working across multi-party teams (cloud platform teams, application modernization partners, client IT)
- Formal documentation standards: produces risks, assumptions, and recommendations in structured, auditable formats
- Deadline discipline: manages concurrent OLA and migration workstreams without sacrificing quality
- Licensing integrity: accurately frames compliance gaps as validation findings, not accusations
QualificationsRequired - 7+ years of hands-on Oracle database administration or migration experience
- 5+ years of AWS cloud architecture or migration delivery experience
- Demonstrated experience leading database cutover events in enterprise environments
- Strong working knowledge of Oracle licensing: processor licensing, SE2 limits, BYOL rules, and management pack entitlements
- Experience producing or consuming cloud migration assessment deliverables (OLAs, TCO models, migration matrices)
Preferred - AWS Certified Database Specialty or AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional
