Your opportunity:

The Data Specialist will report to the Manager, Finance and Administration, Centre for Teaching and Learning. This role presents an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented and analytical professional to support data management, reporting, and business intelligence activities that inform strategic decision-making across the Centre. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing a comprehensive data framework and integrated data systems for the Centre, including the development and implementation of processes for data collection, storage, analysis, and reporting across multiple data sources; ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and accessibility; creating meaningful reports and dashboards; analyzing trends and performance metrics; and delivering actionable insights that enhance operational effectiveness that support the Centre's academic and administrative objectives.

Working collaboratively with internal stakeholders, the Data Specialist will play a key role in leveraging data to drive continuous improvement, evidence-based planning, and organizational success.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Updating and maintaining database records
  • Generating regular downloads from the database
  • Running queries to gather data
  • Producing complex statistical information
  • Interpreting policies in decision-making and providing significant input into localpolicies, procedures and practices that are referred to in future interpretation questions
  • Generating reports


Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Business Administration, Social Sciences with a strong quantitative focus, Computer Science, Informatics or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five years of relevant and related experience in data management, reporting, analytics, business intelligence, program evaluation, or a related field
  • Experience working with a variety of data sources, including program participation data, survey data, institutional data, learning management system data (LMS), and operational data
  • Experience within a post-secondary educational environment
  • Strong collaboration skills with experience working with faculty, staff, administrators, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, pedagogical researchers, and other institutional stakeholders
  • Minimum two years' experience extracting, cleaning, validating, and analyzing data using advanced Excel, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, and manipulating data in Python, or other analytics tools
  • Minimum two years' experience maintaining databases and ensuring data accuracy, integrity, consistency, and compliance with data governance standards
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret policies, procedures, and business requirements and apply them appropriately in data collection, reporting, and analysis activities
  • Experience identifying trends, patterns, and opportunities through quantitative and qualitative data analysis and developing dashboards, reports, performance metrics, key performance indicators (KPIs), and data visualizations that support decision-making.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills with a high degree of accuracy and attendtion to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present data findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience and understanding of current best practices regarding data security and authentication mechanisms (e.g., OAuth 2.0 and OTPs)


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Knowledge of privacy, confidentiality, and information management requirements related to institutional data is an asset
  • Knowledge of Python's SciKit Learn isan asset
  • Basic knowledge of SQL (PostGres) is an asset
  • Knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, CSS is an asset
  • Experience with AWS tools (DynamoDB, Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)) is an asset
