This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY

As a Data Scientist, you will use your knowledge and experience to optimize business results and customer experience by:

  • Utilizing tools such as Microsoft Power Automate; PowerBI, Tableau, Python, Structured Query Language (SQL), SAS, Oracle, machine learning methods, and other data analytics tools, as necessary.
  • Developing mathematical and/or statistical models for evaluation, identification, collection, and analysis of all data used to support assigned projects or program(s). Analyzing complex data elements and systems, data flows, dependencies, and relationships.
  • Preparing presentations, writing reports, building data visualization products, and working to communicate technical results and actionable insights to decision-makers with varying levels of analytic sophistication.
  • Interfacing and collaborating with staff elements, and others to refine understanding of underlying problems(s) and devise possible solutions. Expert understanding of issues and requirements of each division as well as leadership, to report/dashboard requirements and data needs

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Basic Qualifications: You must possess one of the items listed below (A or B):

  • A. Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.


OR

  • B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.


In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following:

  • Applying advanced data science and analytics using tools such as Tableau, GIS, Palantir, and enterprise data platforms to support program analysis, performance measurement, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Developing and executing complex analytical models (statistical, mathematical, and computational) using R, Python, and SQL to extract, analyze, and interpret structured and unstructured data, identify trends, and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Translating technical analyses into actionable insights by producing clear data visualizations, reports, and briefings for senior leadership and stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Providing strategic analytical guidance and collaboration by working with cross-functional teams to define requirements, ensure data integrity and governance, and align analytical products with mission and operational priorities.
