Data Scientist - Catastrophe Risk & Portfolio Analytics:American Modern Insurance Group is seeking a
Data Scientist to join our Portfolio Management and Reinsurance team to help deliver high-quality data and analytics that inform risk and portfolio decisions across the organization. This role focuses on exposure data management, data quality, catastrophe modeling support, and portfolio analytics. The ideal candidate enjoys working with complex datasets, solving data challenges, and contributing to business-critical risk management activities.
Roles & Responsibilities:- Support catastrophe modeling, portfolio management, and risk analytics activities through data preparation, validation, and analysis.
- Perform exposure data management activities, including data collection, validation, cleansing, transformation, and enrichment to support catastrophe modeling and portfolio optimization efforts.
- Identify data quality issues, anomalies, and inconsistencies across multiple internal and external data sources, and recommend appropriate remediation actions.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance recurring management reports, dashboards, and analytical tools that provide insights into portfolio risk and catastrophe exposure.
- Collaborate with catastrophe modelers, portfolio managers, underwriting, actuarial, and data teams to ensure accurate and consistent exposure data.
- Support companywide studies and analyses aimed at identifying, measuring, and monitoring catastrophe risk accumulations and key portfolio risk drivers.
- Establish and maintain efficient, repeatable processes for sourcing, integrating, and validating data from multiple systems and vendors.
- Assist with catastrophe modeling workflows, including data preparation, model input validation, results review, and reconciliation of outputs.
- Support portfolio optimization analyses by providing high-quality exposure data, risk metrics, and analytical insights.
- Document data processes, validation procedures, and analytical methodologies to promote consistency, transparency, and operational efficiency.
- Continuously expand knowledge of catastrophe risk management, portfolio analytics, and relevant data technologies and tools.
Required Technical Skills:- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable business insights.
- Experience working with large, complex datasets and performing data validation, quality assessment, cleansing, and transformation.
- Proficiency in data wrangling and preparation techniques to support analytical and modeling applications.
- Strong programming skills in Python and SQL; experience with Databricks is a plus.
- Experience developing reports, dashboards, and data-driven analyses for business stakeholders; experience with Power BI is a plus.
- Understanding of data structures, relational databases, and data integration concepts.
- Ability to identify data anomalies, investigate root causes, and implement sustainable data quality solutions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and integrity.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and business teams.
Education, Certifications & Designations:- 2 years of data science experience in (re) insurance or another relevant industry .
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business Analytics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, Finance, Mathematics or Computer Science or pursuing a relevant certification
- Familiarity with insurance exposure data and catastrophe risk concepts.
- Experience with catastrophe modeling platforms such as Moody's RMS or Verisk/AIR is a plus.
