This position is open for external candidates only to apply. What You Will Do Data Scientist 1 ($96,600 - $158,000) At this level, you will:
- Assist with collaborative projects to advance throughput of waste characterization.
- Take responsibility for understanding tasks and own contributions to deliverables.
- Set direction and goals for assigned tasks and manage your own assignments.
- Contribute to internal reports and presentations, build data pipelines, visualize data, and improve information flow processes.
Data Scientist 2 ($106,400 - $176,000) In addition to the responsibilities listed above, at this level you will:
- Contribute to medium to large scale proposals, and the development of intellectual property leading to copyrights or patents, journal papers and/or technical reports.
- Set individual and/or team direction and goals for well-defined tasks within a project.
- Develop innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques, and approaches to address specialized problems, expanding on existing efforts or establishing novel research directions such as innovations in waste packaging safety/efficiency.
- Use project assignments to further organizational goals by developing and implementing project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Computing: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the following technical disciplines: script coding (ex. Python, SQL, bash), data engineering, data analysis and visualization, statistics, web application development. Familiarity with Windows and Linux operating systems.
Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to thrive in a highly collaborative environment, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work across disciplines.
Methodology Development: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and implementing technical research and development of projects, including the formulation and test of hypotheses, investigation of alternate solutions and recommendation of solutions to technical problems.
Communication: Ability to communicate safety, security, and quality assurance practices for the work assignment, including ability to formulate, document and present results to non-technical and technical audiences through written and spoken communication.
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 2 Leadership: Experience planning, directing and executing technical projects.
Mentorship: Experience mentoring junior staff, peers, students.
Communication: A record of achievement through publications, presentations and technical products.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications: - Experience with low-code platforms such as Oracle APEX, Mendix, Strategy (a.k.a. MicroStrategy), or Microsoft PowerAutomate.
- Experience transitioning prototypes to production-ready tools, including working with stakeholders to facilitate tool adoption.
- Familiarity with process engineering and improvement.
- Experience navigating large organizational hierarchies and meeting complex legal and administrative requirements.
- Experience bridging between computing and operations communities.
- Experience using prompt engineering for generative AI.
- Active DOE "Q" clearance (or equivalent).

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
