Job Description

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is seeking a Data Manager. The division conducts multidisciplinary clinical and translational research with state-of-the art equipment and cutting-edge technology for diseases and disorders across the lifespan.

A fully-funded Data Manager position is available with Dr. Alison Lee at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC. Funding is guaranteed for 2 years with potential for further support. Dr. Lee's research leverages an NIH-funded ongoing pregnancy cohort study in Kintampo, Ghana (The Ghana Randomized Air Pollution and Health Study, GRAPHS) and a pregnancy cohort study in New York, NY both investigating the impact of perinatal exposures (both chemical and non-chemical) on maternal-child health broadly and the programming of chronic disease risk. Dr. Lee's community-engaged and solutions-oriented research focuses on understanding how exposure to air pollution, humid-heat, and precipitation/drought over pregnancy and early childhood program future health. Research studies consider a range of outcomes including growth, lung health and cardiovascular health in both mothers and children. Mechanisms examined include a specific focus on omic mechanisms including DNA methylation, non-coding microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs, and extracellular vesicle communications. Metabolomics and microbiome are also of interest.

The successful Data Manager will oversee the quality and timeliness of all data management activities for the studies, and will be responsible for data collection and maintenance, documents, questionnaires, data cleaning, query tracking, compilation and maintenance of manuals. The Data Manager will develop and monitor metrics, ensure appropriate training for the staff, and may have limited supervisory responsibility. The Data manager may also lead epidemiological analyses of environmental exposures and health. Expertise in programing languages including R, Python and SAS are required. At least 2 years of prior data management experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Create, update, maintain and validate data for the provision of computerized reports. Manage data through review, computerization, cleaning and auditing for compliance with standard operating procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.
  • Review, analyze, and validate data to ensure consistency, integrity and accuracy based on specific guidelines.
  • Design and implement bioinformatics tools and processes in order to analyze large scale datasets.
  • Develop projects and work independently on a variety of bioinformatics analysis projects.
  • May give presentations both inside and outside of the institution.
  • Develop study questionnaires. Analyze responses; develop plans to provide feedback.
  • Assist in standardizing data management procedures such as documentation for research group operating procedures.
  • Maintain documentation and data quality management guidelines. Write and prepare manuscripts, reports and other materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Ensure data accuracy through review of forms or questionnaires for completeness and consistency.
  • Recognize recurring issues and analyze causes in order to reach a solution. Generate plans and provide tools/techniques for improvement and to measure success.
  • Provides guidance appropriate training to staff. Coordinate activities required to meet quality standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of current regulations and technologies related to data management.
  • Work closely with multi-institutional teams to provide feedback on and develop functional and reproducible data sets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Examples of active projects include:
  1. Early life household air pollution, metal composition and cardiovascular health: Evidence from GRAPHS (R01 ES034433)
  2. Child lung development following a cookstove intervention: Evidence from GRAPHS (R01 ES026991)
  3. Developing climate cohorts to understand health associations and resilience and susceptibility factors in Ghana (R01 ES034433-02S1)

Excellent written and oral communication skills and a willingness to work as part of a collaborative team are required. Candidates will be responsible for moving forward several projects and maintaining active collaborations with outside investigators.

Relevant previous work experience in data management and interest in environmental health, particularly working with high dimensional data or personal exposure monitoring data is highly preferred. Strong quantitative skills, practical experience working with complex epidemiology data, familiarity with the Python and R statistical software packages, experience using RedCap, and excellent oral communication and scientific writing are also necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree (Masters degree in related field preferred)
  • 3 years of data management/quality assurance/experience in a healthcare environment is preferred, or less with demonstration of strong proficiency in a data-driven environment.
