Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Cytogenetics Technologist.

In this role, the successful candidate, under minimal supervision, performs complex clinical laboratory tests on specimens for cytogenetic /FISH testing. Handles high volume of work with appropriate speed and assists less experienced co-workers. Is able to detect subtle abnormalities.

Job Responsibilities:
  • SPECIMEN SET UP, ACCESSIONING. Under minimal supervision, performs complex clinical laboratory tests on specimens for cytogenetic diagnosis. Handles high volume of work with appropriate speed and assists less experienced co-workers. Is able to detect subtle abnormalities. Sets up specimens according to laboratory protocols. Checks to see if referrals are appropriate and complete. Informs appropriate individual if specimen not adequate, unusable, referral form incomplete, etc. Sets up special studies according to laboratory protocol.
  • HARVESTING AND SLIDE PREPARATION. Harvests specimens and prepares slides for G-band metaphase analysis and/or FISH. Harvests at appropriate time according to laboratory protocols. Obtains slides for analysis with adequate number of good quality mitotic cells. Obtain slides for FISH analysis with adequate number of good quality interphase and/or metaphase cells.
  • STAINING AND MICROSCOPIC ANALYSISStains slides and performs microscopic analysis. Performs special staining protocols and special banding analyses according to laboratory protocols.Staining results in well banded material for analysis. G band level consistently of resolution adequate for clinical diagnosis. Performs analysis accurately and demonstrates ability to detect subtle abnormalities from the microscope.Records documentation of analysis clearly and neatly. Demonstrates ability to handle high volume of cases with appropriate speed.
  • IMAGING. Images cells to be Karyotyped. Selects good quality cells to image.. Able to use scanners.Good working knowledge of imaging system.
  • KARYOTYPINGPerforms karyotyping and prepares cases for sign-out. Completes karyotyping with speed. Completes karyotyping accurately and neatly. Is able to detect subtle abnormalities.
  • FISHPerforms hybridization and analysis. Prepares slides for interphase and/or metaphase FISH studies.Performs hybridizations following laboratory protocols.Analyzes FISH cases with accuracy for both interphase and metaphase cells. Shows understanding of various probes and their diagnostic significance.Selects and captures adequate images for documentation.Able to use FISH imaging system and software.Prepares analysis sheets and documents each analysis.Informs Supervisor and/or lab Director promptly of abnormal results or any other issues relating to analysis
  • TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT. Participates in services, continuing education courses, and assists in developing new procedures.Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of policies and procedures in assigned area and responds to, or suggests changes which enhance patient care. Maintains and improves technical expertise by attending continuing education programs and reading current literature in the field. Attends all in service sessions as required.Participates actively in developing, evaluating, and implementing approved new procedures or modifications to existing policies or procedures.
  • TRAINING. Trains new and current employees. Teaches new employees established procedures when necessary. Orients existing employees to new procedures and/or changes in existing procedures.Remains available during all duty hours for consultation by other laboratory personnel, to provide technical advice or assistance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology from a program registered by the NYS Department of Education or Bachelor's degree in the major of biology, chemistry or physical sciences from an accredited college or university or at least five (5) years of experience in a similar laboratory. Education and experience equivalent to the guidelines mandated by CAP, CLIA, and NYSDOH requirements. After September 1, 2013, have received an education, including a bachelor's degree from an approved clinical laboratory technologist program or the substantial equivalent.
  • NYS technologist license from the Office of the Professions, State Education Department, State of New York.
  • ASCP Certification required.
  • Effective oral, written, communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree and NCA/ASCP certification in addition to the minimum requirements.
  • Working knowledge of related theory, principles, practices, applicable instrumentation, analytical methods, quality control, statistical analysis, current government regulations and leadership.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $104,058.29 - $130,121.68 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
