The
Crew Lead - Fiber is responsible for leading and supervising fiber optic installation crews while serving as the primary on-site coordinator for fiber infrastructure projects. This role ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, on time, and in compliance with company and customer quality standards. The Crew Lead provides technical expertise in fiber optic installation, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and splicing while overseeing field personnel and maintaining strong customer relationships.
Key ResponsibilitiesCrew Leadership & Supervision- Lead and supervise fiber installation crews on project sites.
- Provide training, coaching, and technical guidance to team members.
- Monitor crew productivity, workmanship, and adherence to project schedules.
- Conduct weekly safety meetings and enforce company and customer safety requirements.
- Address performance concerns and escalate issues to the Project Manager when necessary.
- Coordinate daily activities to ensure projects are completed efficiently and within budget.
Fiber Installation & Termination- Install and terminate multimode and single-mode fiber optic cabling systems.
- Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP fiber connectors.
- Terminate simplex and duplex fiber jumper cords.
- Install fan-out kits and buffer tube assemblies.
- Construct telecommunications rooms and equipment spaces, including racks, patch panels, fiber hardware, cross-connects, and grounding systems.
- Install work area outlets, faceplates, and associated connectivity components.
- Perform fiber cable breakout and termination for indoor and outside plant fiber systems.
Testing & Troubleshooting- Perform fiber optic testing and certification using OTDR and Fluke test equipment.
- Conduct continuity and performance testing on fiber systems.
- Troubleshoot end-to-end fiber connectivity issues and network-wide faults.
- Identify and correct attenuation, splice, connector, and cable-related problems.
- Calculate fiber loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA industry standards.
Fiber Splicing- Perform mechanical splicing on various fiber optic cable types.
- Perform fusion splicing for multimode and single-mode fiber applications.
- Complete building entrance, maintenance hole, and direct-buried fiber splices.
- Ensure all splicing activities meet industry and customer quality standards.
Project Coordination & Documentation- Coordinate project requirements with the Project Manager.
- Monitor installation progress to ensure compliance with schedules, budgets, and customer expectations.
- Complete all required project documentation accurately and on time, including:
- Timesheets
- Work orders
- Change orders
- Material transfers
- Tool transfers
- Job logs and project records
- Maintain accurate project documentation and reporting.
Customer Relations- Serve as an on-site company representative and point of contact for customers.
- Communicate professionally with clients, vendors, and project stakeholders.
- Address customer concerns and provide project updates as needed.
- Support positive customer relationships and overall project success.
Safety & Quality Assurance- Promote a strong culture of safety and quality.
- Ensure all installation work complies with company policies, customer requirements, and industry standards.
- Perform quality inspections and verify work before project completion.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and increased operational efficiency.
Physical Requirements- Ability to work at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to distinguish wire and fiber colors accurately.
- Ability to read small print, technical drawings, and test results.
- Ability to recognize audible signals and alarms.
- Ability to travel within branch and regional territories as required.
Required Skills & Qualifications- Extensive experience with fiber optic installation, termination, testing, and splicing.
- Proficiency with OTDR testing, Fluke certification equipment, and fiber troubleshooting techniques.
- Experience with outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) fiber systems.
- Knowledge of multimode and single-mode fiber infrastructure.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and project documentation.

- The General Superintendent must be able to travel within the branch territory and/or regional territory as needed.
- The General Superintendent must possess the ability to learn and teach the Company and customer project management systems.
- The General Superintendent must be able to work at heights, off of a ladder and in confined spaces, lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
- Must be able to stand and walk very large job sites regularly.
- The General Superintendent must be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements:- Prefer a minimum of five (5) years' experience of supervisory or managerial experience.
- The General Superintendent must have a minimum of three (3) years' experience as a Lead Communications Technician or similar position.
- The General Superintendent must also have a minimum of five (5) years' experience in telecommunications or a related technical or construction field.
- Must be proficient with a computer and be skilled with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and MS Project).
- Must meet Company minimum driving standards.
- The General Superintendent Must have demonstrated verifiable ability to define a project, create a project scope of work, create an estimate, develop detailed associated tasks and manage these to final completion and customer turnover.
- Must be able to use the following trade Tools: punch tool with 110 block and 66 block blade, 6/8 position combo crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX, butt set, volt-ohmmeter, 4-pair continuity tester and 5-gang punch tool.
