THE POSITION
If you are driven to share your automotive mechanic skills while shaping positive learning experiences, consider becoming a Corrections Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor with the Department of Corrections. In this role at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Dallas, you teach essential automotive techniques that prepare inmates for future success. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position provides both classroom instruction and hands-on training in the automotive mechanic trade, supporting skill development and safe work practices. The role ensures organized training, responsible tool use, and accurate documentation of inmate progress. As a Corrections Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will perform the following duties:
  • Trade Instruction: Teach automotive inspection, repair, and overhaul practices in classroom and on-the-job settings
  • Work Crew Oversight: Direct inmate work crews, assign daily tasks, and inspect completed automotive projects
  • Tool Control: Issue, track, and search materials and tools to ensure accountability and safety
  • Material Planning: Identify needed tools and supplies and submit purchase requests to support training and repairs
  • Record Keeping: Document inmate attendance, progress, and assignment details to maintain accurate training records
  • Operational Support: Perform additional duties that help maintain efficient shop operations and instructional programs

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment, 40-hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,036.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Four years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and replacement of various components and systems used in automobiles, trucks, or construction or heavy equipment; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the automotive mechanic trade.


Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Technician Certificate issued by an approved provider.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent.
  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Emissions Inspection Certification.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Inspection Mechanic Certification for Class C vehicles and Class 7.


Other Requirements:.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
