Full Job Description
About the role

We're looking for a Lead Copywriter to oversee the day-to-day success of our copy team.

This role is equal parts manager, coach, mentor, and quality champion. You'll lead a team of 8-10 copywriters by ensuring work is delivered at a consistently high standard, workloads remain balanced, and writers receive the coaching and support they need to grow.

Reporting to the Creative Director, you'll serve as the primary day-to-day leader for the copy team. While the Creative Director focuses on long-range strategy, department growth, broader AI initiatives, and cross-functional leadership, you'll focus on execution: developing writers, maintaining quality, managing team capacity, driving day-to-day AI implementation, solving immediate issues, and improving how the team operates.

This role primarily supports the copy team across email and related performance marketing work, with occasional involvement in landing page copy as needed.

Success in this role means building a highly accountable, high-performing team with clear ownership and consistent execution. You'll create clarity, remove roadblocks, coach writers through both creative and professional development, and help evolve the team into a more AI-enabled, performance-driven function.

If you enjoy developing people, care deeply about quality, thrive in a fast-paced agency environment, and are excited about helping a creative team work smarter and better, we'd love to meet you

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the copy team through coaching, accountability, and clear communication.
  • Directly manage a team of 8-10 copywriters at launch.
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, provide ongoing feedback, and support each team member's professional growth.
  • Hold writers accountable to quality standards, deadlines, communication expectations, and team processes.
  • Address performance concerns through direct, constructive conversations and partner with the Creative Director on formal performance improvement plans when needed.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and development of new copywriters.
  • Build a team culture that reflects ownership, direct feedback, high standards, and continuous learning.
  • Maintain high standards across copy deliverables through regular review, coaching, and feedback.
  • Ensure consistency in messaging, brand voice, and strategic execution.
  • Use client feedback and performance data to identify coaching opportunities and improve results.
  • Foster a test-and-learn mindset that balances creativity with measurable performance.
  • Help the team raise the bar on quality while improving output volume and delivery consistency.
  • Manage day-to-day workload balancing, team capacity, and assignment planning.
  • Prioritize assignments based on client needs, deadlines, and team bandwidth.
  • Rebalance workload, shift priorities, swap assignments, and make day-to-day capacity adjustments independently as business needs change.
  • Partner with Strategists and Project Managers to keep projects on track.
  • Proactively identify risks, remove blockers, and solve immediate execution issues before they grow.
  • Balance quality with speed in a fast-paced agency environment while protecting team capacity and avoiding burnout.
  • Provide occasional copywriting coverage during PTO, unexpected absences, or periods of high workload to ensure continuity for clients. This is an infrequent responsibility and not a core function of the role.
  • Help evolve the copy team into a more AI-enabled, performance-driven function.
  • Coach writers on using AI to improve efficiency, quality, and creative thinking.
  • Reinforce AI workflows and best practices established by the Creative Director.
  • Identify opportunities to improve team performance through AI and automation.
  • Reinforce current workflows while also helping create stronger standards based on what will best support the department.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of copywriting experience within eCommerce or DTC marketing, including meaningful agency experience.
  • 2+ years of experience leading or managing a team of copywriters or creative professionals.
  • Demonstrated experience managing day-to-day team operations, including workload balancing, capacity planning, prioritization, and resource allocation.
  • Proven experience conducting 1:1s, coaching team members, providing performance feedback, and holding people accountable.
  • Comfortable having direct, constructive conversations around performance and expectations.
  • Strong portfolio across email, SMS, landing pages, and performance marketing.
  • Demonstrated ability to elevate the quality of a team's work through coaching and feedback.
  • Strong understanding of performance marketing, testing methodologies, and conversion-focused copywriting.
  • Demonstrated experience leveraging AI to improve creative workflows, team efficiency, and copy quality.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Comfortable collaborating cross-functionally with multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience preferred.

Additional Information

This is a fully remote role. Candidates must be able to work standard business hours (9:00am-5:00pm) in ET, CT, MT, or PT time zones.

Note on Application Responses
We strongly encourage applicants to answer questions in their own words. While tools like ChatGPT can be helpful for organizing or polishing your thoughts, it is very easy to recognize when responses are copied and pasted without personalization. Candidates who use AI in that way are typically less successful in our process. Please treat your responses as an opportunity to show us how you think and communicate.
