Full Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Building Automation System (BAS) Estimation Engineer with a strong background in HVAC controls and building systems. This role is responsible for independently preparing accurate cost estimates, technical proposals, and scope definitions for BAS/DDC projects across commercial, institutional, and industrial sectors in Canada.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role requiring 5+ years of direct BAS estimation and/or controls engineering experience. The successful candidate is expected to operate with minimal supervision and will not require training, bringing immediate value to the estimating and pre-sales process.

What You Will Do

Estimation & Costing
• Review architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings and specifications to prepare complete and accurate BAS estimates
• Perform detailed material take-offs (controllers, sensors, panels, network components, cabling)
• Develop labour estimates for engineering, graphics/ programming, installation, and commissioning
• Prepare competitive cost estimates, including breakdowns for materials, labour, and subcontractors
• Analyze and account for electrical installation scope within BAS projects

Technical Evaluation & Solution Development
• Interpret HVAC systems and sequences of operation to define controls scope and architecture
• Develop preliminary controls system design (controller selection, I/O counts, network topology)
• Identify integration requirements with third-party systems (chillers, boilers, VFDs, meters, etc.)

Site Visits & Takeoffs
• Conduct site visits and field take-offs to validate project scope and quantities
• Assess installation conditions and identify risks or constraints impacting cost

Collaboration & Sales Support
• Work closely with sales, engineering, project management, and procurement teams
• Provide value engineering options to optimize cost and competitiveness
• Support bid reviews, RFIs, and post-bid analysis with operations

What we look for:

Required
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or related field experience. Three to five years' experience in building systems design and construction or five years' experience in design build construction with emphasis on HVAC required.
• Possesses strong understanding of basic engineering, operational process and financial concepts together with analytical capabilities and ability to manage tasks associated with the development of projects.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team settings, driven for results, focus on the customer, and displays leadership potential.
• Professional written and verbal communication skills and is comfortable working in customer-facing situations.
• Microsoft Office Tools - excel, word, PowerPoint, one drive, outlook, and BAS Estimation tools

Preferred
• Technical experience of 5+ years - mechanical background (both theoretical and practical if possible), building automation (bonus), electrical (bonus)
• Bilingual is nice to have.
• Experience performing building modeling.
• Experience with utilities - navigating, networking and complete understanding of the SaveOn Energy and natural gas programs Financial aptitude - understands simple payback, Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), cost-benefit analysis Sales skills a bonus
• Certifications: Certified Energy Manager (CEM). Professional Engineer (P. Eng) - not mandatory Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T)- not mandatory Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) Energy Star or RETScreen.
• Demonstrated subject matter expertise (SME) in a minimum of 20 Facility Improvement Measures highly desirable.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $81,000-$112,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
