Controls Software EngineerHybrid 3 days onsite - Westborough, MAPosition OverviewAs a Controls Software Engineer, you will develop and maintain control applications for LGES Vertech's AEROS EMS and Power Plant Controller platforms. Working closely with a principal engineer and a cross-functional team, you will apply power system fundamentals and software development skills to solve real-world energy storage challenges. You will contribute to modeling, implementation, and testing, with mentorship as you build expertise in our systems and development practices. We value sound reasoning, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
Primary Responsibilities- Design and implement control algorithms for commercial and grid-scale battery energy storage systems.
- Develop, integrate, and maintain real-time control software in a Linux environment, using C++ and model-based code generation as appropriate.
- Use AI-assisted tools to support development, analysis, documentation, and testing, while reviewing generated outputs, protecting confidential information, and verifying engineering correctness.
- Develop simulation models to analyze system behavior and evaluate control performance against design requirements.
- Develop and execute controls software tests in simulation and on lab or project-site systems to verify performance and reliability. Hands-on electrical work is not part of this role.
- Investigate system performance issues, identify root causes, and support customer and project needs.
- Maintain clear documentation of control designs, implementation decisions, test procedures, and results.
- Collaborate with software quality assurance (SQA) to define verification methods and build repeatable tests.
- Work with program managers, project managers, and project engineers to deliver control functionality that meets project requirements.
Key Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesRequired:- Solid power system fundamentals, gained through coursework or equivalent learning, including three-phase AC systems, real and reactive power, and voltage and frequency behavior.
- Understanding of feedback control fundamentals and experience tuning a PI or PID controller through coursework, simulation, lab work, or professional experience.
- Hands-on programming experience in at least one language, gained through coursework, research, personal projects, or professional work.
- Ability to record, plot, and interpret engineering data to evaluate system behavior and troubleshoot problems.
- Curiosity, initiative, and motivation to learn new controls concepts, software practices, and tools.
- A methodical approach to problem-solving, including testing assumptions and using evidence to diagnose issues.
- Clear verbal and written communication, a collaborative mindset, and a willingness to ask questions and learn from feedback.
- Care and accountability in engineering work, including checking results, documenting decisions, and following through.
Preferred:- Experience developing software in C++, including object-oriented programming.
- Experience using MATLAB/Simulink to model physical systems, develop control algorithms, or analyze results.
- Experience developing and testing real-time controllers.
- Familiarity with Linux, version control, and repeatable software testing.
- Experience using AI-assisted coding or engineering tools, with an emphasis on critically evaluating and testing generated outputs.
- Exposure to PSCAD or similar tools for power system simulation.
- Familiarity with Modbus and DNP3 communication protocols.
- Understanding of battery energy storage systems and the operating principles of grid-connected inverters, power electronics, or transformers.
Education and Experience- A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a closely related field is required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred.
- No minimum number of years of professional experience is required.
Workplace/Travel- Hybrid in office 3 days/week
- Remote work may be considered for the right candidate
- Occasional travel may be required.
