Overview

 

MPI is a worldwide leader in manufacturing specialized equipment for the investment casting industry.  We are looking for a hands-on controls engineer to develop, design and collaborate on the creation of control systems for our equipment.  This includes: creating electrical schematics, PLC program logic, developing and modifying controls, and ensuring our equipment is safe, efficient and cutting-edge.  This position operates within a team of engineers who are responsible for developing customized solutions for the industry.  Hands-on robotic programming experience for complex automation projects is desirable.

Responsibilities
  • Supports MPI lean culture and initiatives by attending and participating in daily lean meetings while supporting efforts to make continuous improvements throughout MPI.
  • Electrical Design: Responsible for creating electrical schematics, plc program logic, and electrical enclosure designs within the constraints determined by the given project, time, cost, performance.
  • Project Work: Completes electrical design for a project with some supervision. These responsibilities include the following:
  • Electrical enclosure design and detail.
  • Electrical schematic design.
  • Hands-on PLC and HMI programming.
  • Hands-on Robotic programming is desirable.
  • Knowledge of vision systems is desirable.
  • Project documentation, including operation instructions.
  • Project checking.
  • Manufacturing assembly support.
  • Checking / Verification: Responsible for ensuring that any of his or her own work is inspected and approved by a qualified engineer.
  • Manufacturing Support: Responsible for supporting manufacturing during functional testing as required on a project-by-project basis.  Supports testing and verification of new or modified programs. Assist in the functional testing of the equipment and support customers during FAT.
  • Documentation: Responsible for the proper documentation of his or her work, including ECR’s, machine manuals, check lists, and others.
  • Scheduling & Reports: Responsible for reporting the status of his or her project in accordance with Epicor Projects (MPI’s information system) and the engineering production schedule at each weekly meeting. If a problem occurs that requires immediate attention, it is the engineer’s responsibility to report to the Principal Engineer at that time.
  • Comm/SAT: When required capable to travel to customers site to support installation, commissioning, and Site acceptance testing.
  • Follows ANSI & OSHA standards and MPI safety rules and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
  • Supports MPI lean culture and initiatives by attending and participating in daily lean meetings while supporting efforts to make continuous improvements throughout MPI.

 

 Principal Activities:

  • The focus of this position is Controls Design; individual will spend 80% of their effort toward project-based activities.
  • Key activities in scope:
    • Continuous improvement/lean activities
    • Performs tasks as described in MPI document “Eng Task List Rxx”
    • Project based work
    • PLC, HMI, and Robot controls design & checking
    • Machine functional testing
    • Schematic creation and checking
  • Activities out of scope:
    • Project planning
    • Supervisory activities

 

Qualifications
  • Sound understanding of electrical design, schematics, and electrical codes regarding machine tool design.
  • Sound computer skills, MS Office, Cad for Schematic creation.
  • Experience with machine tool equipment, electrical design.
  • Experienced PLC programmer. Omron, AB, and Siemens are desirable.
  • Experienced HMI programmer. Indusoft is desirable.
  • Experienced Robotic’s programmer. ABB and Fanuc are desirable.
  • Proficient using MPI information system “Epicor”
  • Ability to know when to seek guidance.
  • Ability to evaluate a process for efficiency and waste
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Methodical approach to problem solving
  • Flexible, able to react to changing needs.
  • Sound communication skills, verbal, written and the ability to listen effectively.
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good judgment skills, able to consider how decisions affect overall products.
  • Due to ITAR agreements with our customers, all MPI employees are required to be US citizens.

Education:
