Job title: Controls Engineer

Reports to: Controls Engineering Manager

Supervisory responsibilities: No

Summary/objective: Specialty Tooling Systems currently has an exciting opportunity for a Controls Engineer. The ideal candidate will enjoy designing and programming custom high-precision and state-of-the-art machines.

Essential functions:
  • Contribute to a team of innovative professionals who create sophisticated and technically advanced machinery for our internal and external customers
  • Manage tasks throughout the entire project lifecycle: concept, build, customer acceptance and onsite troubleshooting & commissioning (with guidance)
  • Perform assigned programming tasks for machines which utilize PLCs, motion controllers, hydraulics, pneumatics, vision, robotics, servo drives, stepper motors, electrical/electronic systems, HMI & SCADA
  • Adhere to company systems, policies, procedures, as well as any specific customer standards.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot and resolve any quality or performance challenges of automated equipment.
  • Attend educational workshops and trade shows, participate in professional societies, review professional publications, and benchmark state of the art practices.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of department processes and standards.
  • Engage customers during project reviews and meetings as needed.
  • Conduct project risk identification and mitigation action planning with STS Project managers.
  • Contribute to project concepts (provide input during estimating phase). May be responsible for one or more modules of the project(s) under design and development.


Required competency, education, and experience:
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant industry experience
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Detail orientated.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality on sensitive projects.
  • Knowledge and experience with Rockwell Automation Products, Fanuc Robotics, and automated assembly cells
  • 2D CAD Electrical Engineering ( AutoCAD Electrical a plus ).
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Remain flexible while working in a fast paced, frequently changing environment.
  • Candidate must have valid driver's license, able to read and speak English
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

Preferred education and experience:
  • Knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC design & programming - GuardLogix, ControlLogix, MicroLogix, RSLogix 5000
  • Experience with Robot simulation, teaching & programming - FANUC, ABB & Motoman
  • CAD experience - AutoCAD Electrical
  • Knowledge of HMI - Panel View, Factory Talk View
  • Siemens, Omron or other programming skills a plus
  • Nachi, ABB, Motoman, Kuka robot skills a plus

Work environment: Office setting in a manufacturing environment.

Physical demands:
  • Sit for long periods of time.
  • See details of objects that are less than a few feet away.
  • Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds

Position type and expected hours of work: Full time

Travel: 0 - 25% potential travel associated with role as needed.
  • Travel may require:
    • International
    • Air travel
    • Overnight stay for several nights, typically limited to 2 week intervals for large projects.
