Full Job Description
Controller

Overview

We are seeking a technically strong, technology-forward Controller to own the day-to-day financial operations of the company and help build the infrastructure to support continued growth. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who enjoys getting into the details, solving complex problems, building scalable processes, and leveraging modern technology to improve the finance function.

The Controller will have significant ownership over the accounting and reporting environment, including financial close, technical accounting, internal controls, audit, compliance, and financial systems. This individual will work closely with senior leadership and operational leaders to ensure the company has accurate, timely, and actionable financial information to support business decisions. This is a hands-on individual contributor role initially, with the opportunity to build and lead a finance/accounting team as the organization grows.

Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process end-to-end.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Perform and review account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and other close activities.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies and accounting issues independently.
  • Establish and improve close procedures, controls, and timelines to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Deliver financial reporting packages to senior leadership, including meaningful commentary on variances, trends, and key business drivers.

Technical Accounting
  • Serve as the internal subject-matter expert on accounting matters, including revenue recognition, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, intercompany activity, and other complex transactions.
  • Research, evaluate, and document accounting treatment for new or unusual transactions.
  • Maintain and update accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure consistent application of accounting standards across the organization.
  • Identify accounting risks and proactively recommend solutions.

Financial Systems & Technology
  • Own and optimize the company's financial systems, including Sage Intacct or comparable ERP, across configuration, dimensions, reporting, workflows, and integrations.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to ensure financial systems accurately support business operations.
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and eliminate unnecessary work.
  • Build and maintain financial reports, dashboards, and data extracts.
  • Leverage advanced Excel and, where applicable, SQL, Power Query, Power BI, Looker, Tableau, Python, or other tools to improve financial reporting and analysis.
  • Evaluate and implement new financial technologies, automation tools, and system integrations as the company scales.
  • Establish scalable processes rather than relying on manual workarounds.

Internal Controls & Compliance
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls appropriate for a multi-location healthcare services organization.
  • Identify control gaps and implement practical improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting, tax, regulatory, and reporting requirements.
  • Support accounting and reporting considerations across US, Canadian, and UK operations.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and audit trails for key financial processes.

Audit & External Partners
  • Lead the annual external audit process, including preparation of schedules, supporting documentation, workpapers, and responses to auditor requests.
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors, auditors, banking partners, insurance providers, and other financial stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for external financial partners.

Financial Analysis & Business Partnership
  • Partner with senior leadership and operations to translate financial information into actionable business insights.
  • Analyze location-level financial performance, revenue, expenses, labor, margins, and other key performance indicators.
  • Provide analysis to support pricing, capital investments, new locations, operational initiatives, and other strategic decisions.
  • Develop reporting that helps leadership understand not only what happened, but why it happened and what should be done next.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning as needed.

Process Improvement & Scale
  • Continuously evaluate the finance function for opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, automation, and scalability.
  • Build standardized accounting processes that can support continued clinic and geographic expansion.
  • Document processes and establish clear ownership across the finance function.
  • Help establish the foundation for a future accounting team as the business grows.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful experience as a Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or Controller.
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and month-end close processes.
  • Hands-on experience with a modern ERP required; Sage Intacct experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to configure, optimize, troubleshoot, and report from an accounting system-not simply use it.
  • Advanced Excel skills required.
  • Experience with SQL, Power Query, Power BI, Looker, Tableau, Python, or other automation/data tools strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a multi-location, multi-entity, services, healthcare, or similar operating environment preferred.
  • Experience with multi-currency and/or international operations is a plus.
  • Strong technical accounting and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems, determine root causes, and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, while also able to understand the broader business context.
  • Comfortable operating independently and taking ownership without requiring significant direction.
  • Comfortable serving as an individual contributor today, with the ability and interest to build and lead a team over time.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will be more than someone who can close the books. We are looking for someone who can help us build a better finance function.

You should be someone who:
  • Gets into the details but understands the bigger picture.
  • Questions inefficient processes rather than accepting them as "the way we've always done it."
  • Uses technology and automation to make work faster, more accurate, and scalable.
  • Can independently investigate an accounting issue and determine the appropriate solution.
  • Is comfortable working directly with senior leadership.
  • Can move between technical accounting, systems, analysis, and business operations.
  • Takes ownership and follows problems through to resolution.
  • Can operate effectively in a growing, changing environment where not every process is already built.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary
  • PTO, and Sick Time
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Opportunity to help shape and scale the finance function of a growing multi-country healthcare services organization
