Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit organization, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its day-to-day accounting operations and ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of its financial reporting.
Reporting to the Chief Financial & Operating Officer, the Controller will oversee the accounting function, manage a small accounting team, strengthen financial processes and controls, and serve as a key partner to organizational leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead general ledger, AP, AR, cash management, reconciliations, and month/year-end close.
- Oversee timely and accurate financial reporting and maintain strong internal controls.
- Manage and develop a team of two staff accountants.
- Partner with senior leadership on budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and financial analysis.
- Lead annual audits, 403(b) audits, compliance reviews, and support Form 990 preparation.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, donor restrictions, grant requirements, and organizational policies.
- Partner with Development and Program teams on grant, corporate funding, and event revenue accounting.
- Improve accounting processes, systems, workflows, and automation to increase efficiency and scalability.
- Serve as a trusted advisor on accounting, reporting, compliance, and financial controls.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA strongly preferred.
- 5+ years of Controller-level experience; nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Experience managing and developing accounting professionals.
- Proven experience leading audits and supporting Form 990 preparation.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with nonprofit accounting systems.
- Experience with MIP and QuickBooks strongly preferred; Sage Intacct or comparable systems also valued.
- Familiarity with integrated platforms such as Salesforce, Justworks, Bill.com, and Bill Spend is advantageous, with Salesforce experience strongly preferred.
Compensation: $140,000-160,000Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
