We are seeking an experienced accounting leader with a strong background in affordable housing and residential real estate operations to oversee a growing property accounting function. This individual will act as a strategic partner to operations leadership while ensuring accurate financial reporting across a diverse portfolio of multifamily and regulated housing assets.
The ideal candidate will come from an affordable housing, LIHTC, HUD, Section 8, or multifamily property management environment and possess both hands-on accounting expertise and the ability to lead and develop a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support a team of property accountants and senior accounting staff across a residential real estate portfolio
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, ensuring deadlines are met and reporting is completed accurately
- Review financial statements, balance sheet reconciliations, variance analyses, and supporting schedules for completeness and compliance
- Partner closely with asset management and property operations teams regarding property performance, occupancy trends, reserve activity, and budget variances
- Assist with onboarding newly acquired or newly developed affordable housing communities into existing accounting processes
- Analyze operating budgets, cash flow projections, and property-level financial performance
- Ensure compliance with affordable housing regulations and reporting requirements where applicable
- Participate in audit preparation and coordinate with external auditors, ownership groups, and lenders
- Develop process improvements and strengthen internal accounting controls across the department
- Mentor and train junior and mid-level accounting staff while fostering a collaborative team environment
- Prepare ad hoc reporting and financial analysis requested by executive leadership
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA designation preferred
- 5+ years of progressive property accounting experience within affordable housing, multifamily, or residential real estate environments
- Prior supervisory or team leadership experience strongly preferred
- Experience working with LIHTC properties, HUD programs, Section 8, rent-regulated assets, or mixed-income housing portfolios is highly desirable
- Strong understanding of month-end close, accruals, budgeting, and financial statement preparation
- Advanced Excel skills required, including financial modeling and reporting functions
- Experience with Yardi Voyager or comparable real estate accounting systems preferred
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with accounting teams, property management, and senior leadership
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
Compensation: $160,000-185,000Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
