About the Role

Reporting to the VP, Finance, the Controller is responsible for leading day-to-day finance operations and supporting the Finance team to deliver accurate, timely, and reliable financial services across the organization. This role oversees core accounting functions, financial reporting, internal controls, and process improvements that support effective decision-making and strong stewardship of resources.

As Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon prepares for continued growth, the Controller will play a key role in strengthening finance systems, improving workflows, and building team capacity. The role works closely with the VP, Finance and leaders across the organization to ensure financial information, processes, and practices are clear, consistent, and scalable.

Key Responsibilities

Finance Operations & Accounting
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking, reconciliations, month-end closing, and general ledger activities.
  • Ensure financial transactions, records, and reporting are accurate, complete, timely, and aligned with organizational policies and accounting standards.
  • Support effective cash flow management, financial administration, and operational finance practices.

Financial Reporting, Budgeting & Analysis
  • Prepare and review regular financial reports, dashboards, and analysis to support leadership decision-making.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial planning processes in collaboration with the VP, Finance.
  • Provide clear financial information and practical guidance to department leaders to support responsible resource management.

Internal Controls, Compliance & Audit
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, finance policies, and procedures to support accountability, consistency, and risk management.
  • Support audit preparation, year-end processes, and compliance with relevant financial, regulatory, and reporting requirements.
  • Identify and address financial process risks, gaps, or inefficiencies in partnership with the VP, Finance.

Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, support, and develop Finance team members through clear priorities, coaching, feedback, and day-to-day guidance.
  • Foster a collaborative, service-oriented, and accountable team culture that supports staff, volunteers, families, and organizational partners.
  • Clarify workflows, roles, and expectations to help the team operate effectively through growth and change.

Process Improvement & Growth Readiness
  • Improve finance processes, tools, documentation, and systems to increase efficiency, consistency, and scalability.
  • Support the implementation of stronger financial workflows and reporting practices as the organization prepares for expanded programs, facilities, and operational complexity.
  • Use a strong understanding of modern technology tools and systems to spot opportunities to improve workflows, reduce manual effort, and support more efficient, scalable finance operations.
  • Contribute to cross-functional projects and change initiatives by bringing financial insight, operational discipline, and a continuous improvement mindset.

Qualifications (Experience & Education)
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • CPA designation, or active progress toward completion, is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including experience with full-cycle accounting, month-end and year-end processes, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience supervising, coaching, or leading finance team members.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit, charity, healthcare, or mission-driven environment is an asset.
  • Experience supporting audits, compliance requirements, process improvements, and financial systems or workflow enhancements.
  • Strong proficiency with accounting systems, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting tools.
  • Experience in leveraging digital tools and technology to automate routine processes, analyze data, and safeguard financial integrity.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, charitable or nonprofit reporting practices, and payroll or fund accounting is an asset.

Role Expectations
  • This role operates in a family-centered environment supporting individuals navigating medical experiences.

Compensation
  • The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $135,000 annually.

Candidates who meet the core requirements of the role can typically expect an offer near the midpoint of the range. Final placement within the range is determined based on experience, skills, and internal equity.
