NOW CFO is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller Consultant to join our Sacramento team. This is a full-time opportunity for a well-rounded accounting leader who can step confidently into client environments, quickly assess business needs, and provide both strategic financial guidance and day-to-day accounting support.

This role is ideal for a Controller-level professional who enjoys variety, problem solving, and working directly with business owners and executive teams. As a Controller Consultant, you will support multiple client engagements, improve accounting operations, strengthen reporting processes, and help leadership teams make better financial decisions.

Unlike a traditional Controller role tied to one company, this position gives you exposure to a broad range of businesses throughout the Sacramento market. Our clients include companies across construction, manufacturing, distribution, nonprofit, professional services, consumer products, and other growing industries. Construction experience is especially important for this role, but we are also looking for someone with a diverse background who can adapt quickly to different industries and business models.

We are looking for a strong accounting leader who can build trust with clients, bring structure to complex accounting environments, and create immediate value through hands-on execution, process improvement, and clear financial insight.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a Controller-level resource for client organizations across the Sacramento market
• Lead accounting operations, month-end close, financial reporting, and general ledger oversight
• Support and improve accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, billing, revenue recognition, inventory, job costing, cost accounting, and compliance processes as needed
• Strengthen internal controls, accounting workflows, documentation, and audit readiness
• Prepare and deliver accurate financial reporting for executives, ownership groups, lenders, investors, and boards
• Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and financial analysis initiatives
• Partner with leadership teams to identify financial trends, operational challenges, and opportunities for improvement
• Evaluate existing accounting processes and implement scalable solutions that support growth
• Serve as a key point of contact for auditors, tax advisors, banking partners, and other external stakeholders
• Assist with ERP implementations, system conversions, reporting improvements, and finance transformation projects
• Provide hands-on support when needed while maintaining a strategic Controller-level perspective

What We're Looking For

• Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or senior accounting leader
• Construction industry experience required, including exposure to job costing, project accounting, WIP reporting, or similar construction-related accounting functions
• Experience across multiple industries strongly preferred
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and full-cycle accounting operations
• Ability to quickly understand new business models and step into changing client environments
• Proven success improving accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency
• Comfortable working directly with business owners, executives, and cross-functional teams
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial audiences
• Hands-on leadership style with the ability to operate both strategically and in the details
• CPA preferred but not required
• Public accounting experience is a plus
• ERP implementation, system conversion, or process transformation experience highly valued

We are looking for a well-rounded accounting professional with experience across multiple industries. Construction experience is required, and additional experience in two or more of the following areas is strongly preferred:

Location Requirements
This role supports clients throughout the Sacramento market and surrounding areas. Candidates should reside within a reasonable commuting distance of Sacramento and be comfortable traveling to client sites as needed.
