Full Job Description
The Role

We're hiring a Controller to own Mecka's accounting, close, and compliance as the company scales globally - the books, the controls, and the systems that keep a fast-growing, multi-entity company accurate and audit-ready.

Mecka is a US corporation with multiple international subsidiaries across North America and Asia, so cross-border accounting, tax, and compliance are core to this seat. You will own the integrity of our financial records and run day-to-day finance operations, working closely with leadership and external accountants, auditors, and tax advisors to make sure our books, filings, and systems are accurate, defensible, and ready for scale. This is a hands-on role for an operator who wants to build the accounting function from the ground up - not just supervise it.

This role is full-time, with the option to be based in our Toronto or New York office.
Responsibilities

Accounting & Close
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close across the US parent and all international subsidiaries
  • Maintain accurate books and financial reporting in line with US GAAP and relevant local frameworks
  • Run bookkeeping, AP/AR, payroll accounting, and account reconciliations across entities
  • Own intercompany transactions, multi-currency accounting, and cross-entity consolidation

Controls & Audit
  • Design and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and documentation as transaction volume and entity count scale
  • Build and own the close calendar, checklists, and reconciliation processes
  • Coordinate the annual audit and manage relationships with external accountants and auditors
  • Maintain audit- and diligence-ready records at all times

Tax & International Compliance
  • Own Mecka's US and international tax compliance across the US parent and global subsidiaries
  • Manage federal, state, and international filings; support transfer pricing, withholding, and treaty application across jurisdictions
  • Coordinate with external tax counsel and Big 4 advisors on filings, planning, and structuring
  • Maintain documentation and posture to defend tax positions in audits and diligence

Financial Operations & Systems
  • Transition finance operations from early-stage workflows (spreadsheets) to a structured ERP and financial management system
  • Build and manage the finance tech stack - ERP, expense, billing, payroll, and tax-tech
  • Stand up repeatable processes for reporting, reconciliation, and consolidation across entities

Reporting & Partnership
  • Deliver accurate, timely financial reporting to founders and leadership
  • Support budgeting, investor reporting, and financing diligence as needed
  • Translate complex accounting and tax matters into clear guidance for non-finance leadership
  • Help build and manage the accounting team over time, and serve as the financial backbone of the organization
Who You Are

Required Experience
  • US CPA in good standing
  • Manager- or controller-level accounting experience, with strong technical accounting depth
  • Experience owning the close and accounting operations (or a major pillar) at a multi-entity, multi-jurisdiction company
  • Strong international experience: US-parent / foreign-subsidiary structures, including cross-border accounting, tax, and compliance
  • Track record working closely with external accountants, auditors, and tax firms
  • Strong technical command of US GAAP and US federal/state corporate tax
  • Ability to translate complex financial and tax matters into clear decisions for non-finance leadership

Strong Signals
  • Big 4 training (PwC, KPMG, EY, or Deloitte)
  • Prior in-house accounting or controllership role at a startup or scale-up
  • Experience implementing or managing ERP and tax-tech systems (NetSuite, Avalara, Workiva, etc.)
  • Experience supporting audits, M&A diligence, financing, or international entity setup
  • Familiarity with hardware, robotics, AI, or capital-intensive technology companies
  • Comfortable operating both hands-on (filings, audits, reconciliations) and at the reporting/leadership level

Nice to Have
  • Dual designation (US CPA + Canadian CPA, CA, or other jurisdictional credential)
  • Tax-credit experience (US R&D credit, SR&ED, or equivalent)
  • Experience operating across North America + APAC entity structures
  • Experience hiring and managing a small accounting team

You Are
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Comfortable working directly with founders and leadership
  • Able to design systems and processes from first principles
  • Calm and structured in fast-moving environments
  • Motivated to build an accounting function that scales with the company
Why This Role
  • Build and own the accounting function of a fast-scaling AI robotics infrastructure company operating across the US, Canada, and Asia
  • Own the full surface area - close, tax, controls, systems - instead of a narrow slice
  • Work directly with founders and external advisors on the financial backbone of the company
