Controller (Social Services Agency)This is more than a traditional accounting role. The Controller serves as a key partner to the CFO, helping lead financial strategy, strengthen systems, and support program leaders in managing complex funding streams. The Controller will also act on behalf of the CFO as needed, including presenting financials to executive leadership and the Board.
What You'll Do - Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and financial close processes
- Produce accurate, timely financial statements and reports for leadership and the Board
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and federal grant requirements (Uniform Guidance)
- Oversee financial management of complex funding streams, including multi-year government grants and contracts
- Lead cost allocation methodologies across programs and funding sources
- Manage and coordinate the annual audit and Single Audit; serve as primary liaison with auditors
- Supervise and develop a finance team of 7-8 staff, from entry-level to senior roles
- Partner with program leadership to support budget management and contract performance
- Serve as the CFO's delegate as needed, including presenting financial information, representing the finance function, and supporting strategic organizational decision-making.
- Identify and implement improvements to systems, processes, and internal controls
- Manage the annual indirect cost rate application process
What You Bring - Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
- 7+ of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit accounting, including supervision of finance teams and management of local, state, and federal government grants accounting
- Hands-on experience working with Head Start contracts highly desired
- Strong knowledge of Uniform Guidance, cost allocation, and Single Audit requirements
- Experience managing complex, multi-program funding environments
- Advanced skills in Excel. Experience with Financial Edge NXT highly desired
- Proven ability and demonstrated experience leading and developing teams
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to non-financial audiences and senior leaders
Compensation & BenefitsSalary: $130,000 - $150,000 (commensurate with experience)
