Job Title: Control Systems Engineer EEO Classification: Professional

Department: Engineering FLSA Status: Salaried, Exempt

Reports to: Engineering Manager

Position Summary:

Responsible for automation, instrumentation and controls, including computer hardware and software, used in devices and machines for the company's parachute manufacturing processes. This includes configuring and integrating electronic and mechanical hardware with software products in a manufacturing environment.

The Systems Engineer must identify, troubleshoot and repair problems in instrumentation and controls systems that occur in production equipment and processes. He/she must be able to run tests, isolate problems, replace faulty instruments, install cables, and perform other tasks, as necessary. This individual will also perform preventive maintenance and calibration of plant instrumentation and controls systems. The ideal candidate would also have interest and understanding of mechanical machine design fundamentals. This person would be skilled in designing, constructing, and implementing electrical control panels for automation equipment including developing electrical schematics with drawing software (AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Troubleshoots, installs, maintains, modifies, calibrates, inspects, and repairs instrumentation process control systems, motor starters, controls and variable frequency drives.

2. Coordinates the engineering and development of a laser table electrical system and provides guidance to maintenance staff during installation and maintenance of laser system

3. Controls industrial processes using electronic software and applications such as scientific and analytic computer software, calculators, voltage and current meters, electronic probes, process multi-meters and specialized calibration equipment.

4. Helps with all electronic/mechanical test equipment including hydraulic tensile machines.

5. Assists in the design of software for test/manufacturing equipment

6. Calibrates all electrical equipment used for production and testing of materials

7. Performs other inherent duties related to but not limited to the above

Job Specific Competencies
• Knowledge of electrical safe work practices and procedures including laser safety and machine safety standards (LOTO, e-stops).
• Knowledge of the function and operation of electronic controlling, measuring, recording, transmitting, testing and diagnostic equipment.
• Knowledge of industrial automation, control panels, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and instruments.
• Knowledge in the proper applications of instruments that control a process function.
• Ability to troubleshoot and program with electronic related software.
• Ability to create and write-to SQL databases for material traceability.
• Ability to work with scientific and analytic computer software, calculators, voltage and current meters, electronic probes, process multi-meters and specialized calibration equipment, in an industrial operations setting.
• Ability to troubleshoot, edit, configure and program controls systems such as PLCs, Human Machine Interface, drives, SCADA or other proprietary agency/department software with minimal supervision.
• Ability to design, construct, assemble and rearrange circuits and perform other modifications to manufacturing and test equipment.
• Ability to interpret engineering plans, diagrams, schematics, PLC ladder logic, and blueprints.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks drawing software to create and maintain flow diagrams, schematics, and BOMS.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Must have problem solving skills
• Must be analytical and innovative
• Must be computer literate with experience in word processing, spread sheets and databases
• Must have experience in reading and writing directly to SQL databases.
• Must have experience in robotic controls.
• AutoCAD or equivalent experience preferred
• Must be able to multi-task and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required for communication with all levels of the organization, customers and vendors.
• Basic understanding of ISO standards.

Education and Experience Requirements
• B.S. in engineering discipline (Electrical or Mechanical) with minimum of 5 years related experience preferred.
• Consideration for no degree with 10+ years related work experience.
• Must be proficient in Labview, Windows systems and visual programming languages. Python, C/C++ and/or C# preferred.
• Must have experience with stepper and servo motors and controllers.
• OMRON/PMAC as well as PLC programming and implementation experience strongly preferred
• Factory Equipment Safety Standards

Physical Requirements
• Finger, hand and arm dexterity necessary for preparing and maintaining reports and files and for computer keyboarding
• Visual acuity necessary to identify electrical and mechanical defects and to read blueprints and schematics
• Listening skills crucial for communicating with staff, customers and vendors
• Must be able to sit for extended periods of time
• Must be able to stand, walk and climb stairs on a routine basis
• Ability to kneel, stoop, bend at waist and crouch when troubleshooting equipment
