Full Job Description
TL;DR: We're looking for a gifted writer to craft beautiful, theologically rich content to support the core in-app experience for individual users - meditations, prayers, community challenges, and reflections that thousands of people will use to encounter God every day.

What You'll Do

  • Write World-Class Spiritual Content: Craft theologically grounded, narratively driven meditations, reflections, and guided prayers that help lead our users into a transformative encounter with God.
  • Drive Production: Own the creative direction of projects end-to-end - from ideation and talent sourcing to recording sessions and final audio direction - ensuring every script translates beautifully from page to recording.
  • Build Creative Partnerships: Identify and cultivate relationships with external collaborators whose voices and perspectives can deepen our content and expand what's possible on the platform.
  • Shape Content Strategy: Pitch ideas for new series, seasonal content, and creative formats that resonate with Hallow's diverse and growing audience.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Partner with marketing, product, and design to communicate each piece's core promise and guide how we bring it to our users.

What You'll Love

  • Mission: This work is incredibly humbling. Every day we get amazing stories and get the pleasure of working on something that impacts lives. One of my favorite user quotes: "I hate quoting an old, overused cliche, but I've been very lost. And I think for the first time in a while I may be found."
  • Ownership: Take creative responsibility for building prayer experiences that can change peoples' lives.
  • Growth: From day 1, you'll be a part of the startup journey. You'll be part of a fast-growing team shaping Hallow's library of content, helping it reach our users worldwide.
  • Flexibility: HQ is in Chicago with the full team and we would love to have everyone there. That being said, we're super flexible with location / hours; we don't care when or where you work, just that it gets done. Preference is given to candidates who can maximize overlap with the US Central time zone.
  • Comp: We will pay competitive market rates in terms of equity, cash, & benefits.

What We're Looking For

  • Passion: First & foremost, we're looking for someone excited about our mission to help people pray. It makes it a lot more fun :)
  • Exceptional Writing Craft: You write with clarity, beauty, and depth. You tell stories well. You understand pacing, voice, and how to move a reader, and you've done it professionally.
  • Theological & Media Fluency: You're grounded in Catholic and broader Christian theology, scripture, and spiritual tradition. You know the difference between devotional and catechetical writing, and you can do both. You have a finger on the pulse of what people are watching, reading, and talking about, bringing that cultural awareness to content that connects faith to everyday life.
  • Collaborative & Coachable: You welcome feedback, iterate quickly, and work well with editors and teammates.
  • Experience: A degree in theology, English, creative writing, or a related field, plus at least 3 years of professional writing experience and a portfolio that demonstrates spiritual depth and narrative craft.
  • Willing to Travel: While the role is remote-first, candidates must be willing to travel for content production at least 1-2 times per quarter and for in-person team meetings at least twice a year.

Compensation Range

$75,000-$110,000 USD per year

The above range only includes cash compensation. Each full-time employee in the US also receives equity compensation, alongside a top-tier benefits package (e.g., unlimited PTO, insurance, remote-flexible work, fully paid parental leave, 401(k) match, and stipends for spiritual development, health & wellness, home-office, and learning).

The above range for cash compensation refers to base salary. All full-time employees are also eligible to be considered for a discretionary bonus at the end of each fiscal year. These ranges are just initial estimates. They may vary depending on market or location and may be adjusted depending on the person we end up hiring for this role, their experience, and market dynamics.

We're a small team and we care deeply about each new hire, so sometimes it can take us a while to get through the hiring process for these roles. Apologies in advance for any delays. We'll do our best to keep you updated throughout the process, and we really appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through everything.

We are honored that you'd consider joining the team and look forward to connecting with you.

Best,
