Job Description

The Role

The Construction Project Manager is a critical role responsible for delivering complex construction projects across General Motors either in manufacturing facilities, including assembly, stamping, powertrain, casting, and paint operations, or non-manufacturing sites such as labs and garages, vehicle engineering centers, technology centers, office complexes, design studios, and proving grounds.

This role provides end-to-end construction project management leadership for assigned projects from funding approval through stakeholder occupancy, including site/civil, buildings, and utilities infrastructure. The successful candidate will operate as a highly independent Level 7 individual contributor who can lead through influence, navigate ambiguity, solve difficult problems under pressure, and deliver results against aggressive targets.

This position requires exceptional communication and executive presence, with regular interaction across senior leaders of the corporation, public officials, governing municipalities, and development partners. The role also requires strong presentation and facilitation skills across multiple audiences, including in-person and virtual collaboration sessions. A strong knowledge of the local area, along with an established professional reputation and working relationships with city officials and local governing agencies, is strongly preferred.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of complex construction projects from funding approval through stakeholder occupancy, ensuring safe, timely, and cost-effective completion.
  • Initiate, organize, and lead cross-functional project teams consisting of engineering, finance, purchasing, safety, contractors, stakeholders, and other key partners.
  • Independently manage diverse, concurrent projects with minimal direct supervision, exercising sound judgment and discretion on significant project matters.
  • Drive project scope, schedule, budget, risk, and performance metrics, establishing clear targets and holding teams accountable to aggressive delivery commitments.
  • Solve difficult construction, schedule, infrastructure, stakeholder, and execution challenges using rigorous logic, data, experience, and sound professional judgment.
  • Identify issues early, assess risks and downstream impacts, and develop practical, effective solutions when operating with incomplete information or limited precedent.
  • Lead coordination across multiple internal and external partners, aligning stakeholders and influencing decisions without direct authority.
  • Interface regularly with senior corporate leaders, public officials, development partners, utility providers, contractors, and governing municipalities to drive alignment, approvals, and project outcomes.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, compelling presentations, recommendations, status updates, and decision materials for a wide range of audiences, including executive reviews and virtual collaboration sessions.
  • Anticipate future construction and infrastructure issues by applying broad knowledge of design, construction execution, utility systems, and stakeholder needs.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project delivery, internal processes, construction methods, and operating approaches to support broader functional and business strategies.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource and mentor to less experienced team members and project partners on complex construction issues and project delivery practices.
  • Demonstrate strong self-management by prioritizing effectively, meeting deadlines, maintaining momentum, and delivering high-quality outcomes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of project management experience in industrial, construction, infrastructure, or related technical environments.
  • Proven experience leading facilities design and construction activities across multiple project phases.
  • Working knowledge of construction contracts, engineering drawings, specifications, and project controls.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, construction standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with construction safety requirements and Safety Contract Management processes.
  • Experience managing project budgets, forecasts, change orders, and cost performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to use metrics, analysis, and performance management tools to drive project execution and results.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve complex problems, make sound decisions under pressure, and perform effectively in ambiguous situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging across technical, business, executive, and external audiences.
  • Strong presentation development and delivery skills, including the ability to lead presentations and virtual collaboration sessions across multiple audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build credibility and maintain effective relationships with senior leaders, public officials, contractors, consultants, and external partners.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% to 75% domestically and internationally.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Experience managing complex capital construction projects across occupied, technical, industrial, or mission-critical facilities.
