Full Job Description

Freese and Nichols is currently searching for an experienced Construction Manager in Martinsville, VA.  In this role, you will act as construction manager for a dam rehabilitation project. This project will include construction involving soils, traditional concrete, roller compacted concrete, drain fill, riprap, pipe and reinforcing steel. You will administer the construction contract by managing, observing, and reporting on ongoing construction on a variety of transportation, water and/or facilities infrastructure projects to verify compliance with approved plans and specifications.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage the observation and inspection of ongoing construction work including material sampling and testing as well as measuring quantities.
  • Review contractor’s work for compliance with contract documents and clarify contract documents for the contractor.
  • Lead the development and management of change/field orders, updates to construction schedule, submittals, request for Information (RFI), claims, pay requests, construction meetings and closeout processes
  • Communicate with contactor about non-conforming work
  • Correspond with client, contractors, and other employees 
  • Collaborate with design teams to facilitate responses to RFIs and submittals and/or construction issues
  • Read plans and specifications to be able to ensure construction is in accordance with plans and specifications
  • Communicate with owner to understand owner’s needs and clarify owner’s objectives and relay information to Freese and Nichols and contractors
  • Conduct pre-bid and pre-construction conferences
  • Support the design phase process as assigned
  • Oversee field staff and the execution of their daily work
  • Coordinate with our third-party testing subcontractor
  • Implement the QA testing plan
  • Perform weekly observation of the Contractor’s erosion control systems during construction.
  • Support sales and marketing efforts

Qualifications
