Job Description

Job Title: Component Design Engineer - Turbomachinery Transmissions

Working Pattern: Full time

Working location: Indianapolis, IN/Hybrid - 3 Office Days/Week)

As a Component Design Engineer, you will be part of the Global Mechanical Systems Capability function. You will create engineering solutions that satisfy functional and physical requirements symptomatic of Product System and Sub-System level environments. Crucially, the engineered solutions must exhibit robustness for manufacturing capability. You'll be responsible for the on-time delivery and quality of component design definition artifacts i.e., documents, models, definitions that meet system level and sub-system requirements. You will participate within an IPT described by Product Lifecycle System (PLS) and operate in accordance with applicable Rolls-Royce Management System (RRMS) policies and processes. As the Component Design Engineer, you will also be responsible for sub-system integration of the technical activities for their design solutions and enabling lifecycle profitability through the Supply Chain Design.

What you will be doing:

  • Deliver new component designs, analyses, and changes within the Design Technical Approval (DTA) gated process, which includes (but is not limited to) creating design concepts, optimizing concepts to a final definition, preparing technical presentations and documents, supporting creation of drawings, analysis, delivering hardware for validation, and release of hardware to the field
  • Support the supply chain in procuring hardware, concession consultation and execution of Drawing Alteration Requests (DARs)
  • Provide engineering support of service and/or development related hardware issues including Engine Investigations (EI) and Technical Variance (TV) analysis
  • Develop and specify component design requirements in accordance with module, system, and customer interface requirements
  • Address manufacturing, assembly, in-field, and aftermarket issues as they arise
  • Participate in or lead Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) team

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, with 1+ years of experience in mechanical design, OR
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, OR
  • JD/PhD in Mechanical Engineering
  • To be considered for this role, you must be a US Citizen


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the design, analysis, and/or verification of aerospace mechanical components and/or systems.
  • Experience in progressing designs/changes through a gated review process.
  • Experience with gas turbine or turbomachinery power transmission components, including gears, rolling element bearings, shafts, and high-performance seals.
  • Experience in the following software applications: Siemens NX, Siemens Teamcenter, ANSYS, Microsoft Excel
  • Experience in dimensional tolerance stack-ups and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Knowledge of gas turbine subsystems and components and their function and operation
