Trade Compliance Manager

Position Summary

Trew is seeking a Trade Compliance Manager to build and continuously improve the company's global trade compliance program across operations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, India, and other international markets.

This role serves as the primary subject matter expert for export controls, sanctions compliance, customs compliance, and cross border trade operations. As a leading material handling automation and systems integration company, Trew designs, manufactures, sources, installs, and services equipment and software solutions for customers around the world.

Reporting to the Legal Department, the Trade Compliance Manager will partner closely with Engineering, Supply Chain, Procurement, Operations, Finance, HR, and Sales to develop practical compliance processes that enable business growth while managing regulatory risk.
Trade Compliance Responsibilities
  • Lead Trew's global trade compliance program across North America, Europe, and Asia.
  • Classify products, software, technology, and technical data under applicable U.S. export control regulations, including EAR classifications and ECCN determinations.
  • Manage export licensing requirements, license exception reviews, and interactions with regulatory agencies when required.
  • Oversee restricted party screening processes for customers, suppliers, channel partners, contractors, and other third parties.
  • Develop and maintain deemed export and technology access controls for foreign national employees and contractors.
  • Monitor changes in export control, sanctions, and customs regulations and assess business impacts.
  • Maintain trade compliance procedures, documentation, training records, and audit trails.
  • Support investigations, corrective actions, and voluntary disclosures when necessary.
Customs & Cross Border Operations
  • Oversee customs compliance processes supporting equipment, spare parts, and service operations across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Germany, and India.
  • Coordinate HTS classifications, country of origin determinations, and free trade agreement qualifications, including USMCA requirements.
  • Manage relationships with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and trade advisors.
  • Support import and export transactions related to project execution, field service activities, and international sourcing.
Training & Compliance Governance
  • Develop and deliver compliance training programs for Engineering, Supply Chain, Procurement, Sales, Service, and Operations personnel.
  • Maintain compliance policies, procedures, and guidance materials.
  • Establish compliance metrics and reporting for executive leadership.
  • Support integration of acquired businesses into Trew's trade compliance framework.
  • Partner with Legal and HR on related compliance matters, including third party due diligence and anti corruption controls where applicable.
Customer & Supplier Compliance Requirements
  • Support customer and contractor qualification platforms, including Avetta, ISNetworld, and similar systems.
  • Respond to customer compliance questionnaires and due diligence requests.
  • Assist Supply Chain and Procurement teams with supplier compliance requirements, including sanctions screening and responsible sourcing initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, International Trade, Supply Chain, Legal Studies, Engineering, or related field required.
  • J.D. preferred but not required.
  • 4+ years of experience in trade compliance, customs compliance, international trade, legal compliance, or related functions.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. export controls, EAR classifications, sanctions regulations, restricted party screening, customs compliance, and international trade operations.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, automation, industrial equipment, systems integration, engineering services, or field service organizations preferred.
  • Familiarity with operations in Canada, Mexico, Germany, and India strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting acquisitions, post merger integration, or private equity backed organizations is a plus.
  • Professional certifications such as CUSECO, CES, CCEP, or similar credentials are preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical business solutions.


Willingness to travel internationally (5-10%) to support compliance program implementation, training, and investigations across the company's global operations.

Work Environment

This is primarily a desk-based role requiring extended periods of sitting and computer use. The position may require occasional travel to manufacturing facilities, international offices, or project sites for compliance reviews, training delivery, and investigations. While primarily office-based, mobility within the office and manufacturing facility may be required for collaboration with colleagues across departments.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. Ability to traverse office, manufacturing facilities, and customer sites as needed.
