Overview

Selective Insurance is seeking a Complex Claims Specialist to handle environmental liability claims. This is a remote position, but the ideal candidate will have experience handling claims in the North/East region. This position will proactively evaluate, and manages insurance claims involving environmental loss exposures, including pollution incidents, contamination, hazardous material releases, and related property damage or bodily injury matters. Handles toxic tort matters including asbestos, silica, diacetyl, and benzene. Reviews policy coverage analyzes claim facts, coordinates with insureds, brokers/agents, consultants, legal counsel, and remediation experts, and supports timely, accurate claim resolution in accordance with policy terms, regulatory requirements, and internal claims practices.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively evaluates and resolves coverage issues for private and public companies, and governmental entities, including municipalities and cities, in order to maintain the highest professional customer service and technical standards, ensure timely fashion and meet all deadlines.
  • Investigate claims through telephone, written correspondence, and/or personal contact with claimants, attorneys, insureds, agents, witnesses, and others having pertinent information.
  • Effectively and efficiently present claims and claim trends to Claims and Underwriting Leadership to include discussion of coverage, liability assessment, and ultimate exposure to the insured and company.
  • Timely analyzes information in order to effectively evaluate assigned claims to determine ultimate exposure to the insured and company.
  • Effectively evaluates, negotiates, and resolves claims within delegated authority utilizing the appropriate denials or releases.
  • Effectively analyzes claims in conjunction with policy to assess coverage availability and prepares appropriate coverage letters explaining coverage position to insureds/agents.
  • Reports on all cases going to trial on a timely basis and attends portions of trials when warranted or requested by management.
  • Ensures proper referrals and timely updates to appropriate reinsurer(s).
  • Plans, reviews and conducts claims reviews and settlement conferences. Mediates complaints and disputes regarding claim resolution.
  • Must be able to drive an automobile to travel within territory. Car travel represents approximately 0-10% of employee's time and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements
  • Experience handling Environmental and Toxic Tort claims required;
  • Ability to properly address exposure and adjust files and expenses;
  • Ability to analyze claims presented, legal complaints, litigation reports, and trend analysis to identify issues;
  • Experience in complex coverage analysis and significant large loss evaluations;
  • Superior communication, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent presentation skills;
  • Moderate proficiency with standard business-related software (including Microsoft Outlook, Work Excel, and PowerPoint);
  • Sufficient keyboarding proficiency to enter data accurately and efficiently; and
  • Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.


Education and Experience
  • JD (law degree) or MBA (Masters in Business Administration) required.
  • 8+ years claims handling experience involving primary/duty to defend policies, with significant experience handling Environmental Toxic Tort claims with a primary P&C carrier.
  • Experience in coverage analysis and claim evaluations and preparation of coverage position letters.
  • Superior communication skills and strategic negotiation and claim disposition skills along with proven problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Moderate proficiency with standard business-related software (including Microsoft Outlook, Work Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Sufficient keyboarding proficiency to enter data accurately and efficiently.
  • Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.

Pay Range

USD $124,000.00 - USD $160,000.00 /Yr.
