Responsibilities

  • Underwrite SBA 7a and 504 loan requests according to Bank's and SBA's policies.
  • Prepare comprehensive financial analyses to assess debt servicing capabilities.
  • Evaluate creditworthiness of borrowers and guarantors.
  • Analyze collateral to confirm compliance with lending standards.
  • Review third-party reports to substantiate credit recommendations.
  • Ensure proposed loans meet all eligibility requirements before approval.
  • Communicate with lenders to clarify applicant needs and credit assessments.
  • Draft detailed loan write-ups covering cash flow, collateral, and imposed conditions.
  • Review SBA loan documents for accuracy before final approval and closing.

Job Description

The SBA Underwriter at PlainsCapital Bank is responsible for underwriting SBA 7a and 504 originations, modifications and servicing actions. The SBA Underwriter also performs portfolio monitoring activities needed and is responsible for administering the Bank's small business lending platform, working closely with the SBA Credit Officer and SBA Director.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite SBA 7a and 504 loan requests to ensure they adhere to the Bank's and SBA's credit policies and procedures.
  • Prepare cash flow, spreads, sensitivity testing, financial and industry analysis as appropriate to verify business's ability to service debt.
  • Evaluate the creditworthiness of prospective Borrower(s) and Guarantor(s).
  • Analyze proposed collateral for sufficiency and compliance with Bank's and SBA's lending standards.
  • Analyze third-party reports and other due diligence documentation to ensure support of credit recommendations.
  • Determines whether the proposed loan, as structured, conforms to the Bank's and SBA's current lending parameters and eligibility requirements
  • Communicate with Lenders concerning applicant's creditworthiness and/or additional needs items to finalize analysis.
  • Prepare a detailed loan write-up including cash flow analysis, business and guarantor analysis, collateral analysis, and detail all conditions that underwriting is imposing on the closing or funding of the loan.
  • Responsible for reviewing and/or drafting term letters; ensuring that the terms and conditions of the loan approval are accurately reflected
  • Review SBA loan documents for accuracy and conformance with SBA authorization and loan approval
  • Provide support to SBA Loan Closers and Loan Servicing to ensure loan all pre and post-closing conditions are met and the loan is closed and boarded smoothly and accurately
  • Underwrite and recommend approval/denial of loan modifications and servicing requests
  • Promote and provide excellent customer service by effectively communicating and cooperating with all internal and external customers
  • Provide support in the acquisition of new clientele and the maintenance of existing relationships; promote close working relationships with clients
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the Bank's lending objectives, credit policies and procedures, underwriting guidelines, and various lending products. Understands and complies with requirements of all laws and regulations applicable to the position.
  • Complete tasks created by workflow items from Small Business Lending Platform
  • Administration of Small Business Lending platform (work with vendor on any platform/application issues, review/respond to workflow errors, work/delegate workflow items that need to be addressed outside of the system)
  • Other duties as required.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business related field required. Strong preference for Finance or Accounting major or concentration.
  • 5 or more years' experience underwriting SBA 7a and 504 loans with proven ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret information regarding financial statements, tax returns, and other information for the more complicated commercial loan transactions
  • Completion of a formal Credit Training program at a large bank is a plus
  • Deep understanding of Small Business Administration's Standard Operating Procedures and the ability to stay up to date of current and changing regulations related to the banking industry, SBA 7a, and 504 loan programs.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of customers, clients, vendors, and internal partners.
  • Excellent PC skills, including word processing and spreadsheets via Microsoft Office products as well as custom applications and systems.
  • Excellent analytical, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and work in a deadline-driven, dynamic environment.
  • Must be self-motivated with strong initiative, accountability, and attention to detail with the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
