Full Job Description
The Fire Protection Engineer is responsible for supporting the fleet Fire Protection team at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, NC. The position may be filled at the Engineer III or Senior Engineer level, depending on the candidate's experience. Additionally, the role requires providing support to other nuclear plants within the Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on NFPA codes and fire protection programs, ensuring that the site complies with all relevant codes, standards, fleet and site procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide engineering expertise, including field support, to identify, analyze, and resolve issues within the fire protection program.
  • Offer technical support to Fire Protection team members who develop and revise Fire Probabilistic Risk Assessments (PRAs) and Nuclear Safety Culture Assessments (NSCA).
  • Prepare for and support inspections and audits conducted by the NRC, INPO, NEIL, NSRB, and NOS.
  • Monitor the testing and operational performance of fire protection features in the plant, such as penetration seals and fire doors.
  • Review engineering changes for accuracy, program impact, and plant license requirements.
  • Develop and/or provide technical support in the development of surveillance testing, fire protection pre-plans, and fire impairment monitoring and reporting processes.
  • Prepare and/or review Fire Protection Engineering calculations
  • Review and respond to fleet/industry OE
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in both office and plant environments, requiring walking, light lifting, occasional climbing, and exposure to temperature, noise, and radiation.
  • The role operates within a procedural and process-oriented structure due to stringent regulatory requirements.
  • Must be available to work some weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • On-call duty responsibilities are part of the position.
  • Must be able to conduct field walk-downs in an operating plant environment.
  • Occasional travel outside the Duke Energy system may be necessary.
Senior Engineer - Basic / Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or master's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least 6 years of engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete work with minimal supervision.
Engineer III - Basic / Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or master's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.


Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least three years of experience in Fire Protection Engineering responsibilities.
  • Nuclear Power Plant experience
  • Registered Professional Engineer
Specific Requirements
  • Ability to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
  • May be required to participate in the Emergency Response Organization (ERO), which could involve callouts with a specified response time and inclusion in an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment such as hard-hat, safety glasses, and fall protection as needed.
  • Work is conducted in both office and plant environments.
  • Additional hours may be required based on workload and business needs.
  • Occasional overnight travel
