Role Summary

The CNC Manufacturing Engineering Manager leads CNC programming and manufacturing engineering operations within a high-mix, precision contract manufacturing environment. This role blends hands-on production support with strategic leadership, driving operational excellence, process standardization, and continuous improvement. The manager ensures engineering deliverables consistently support production schedules while building scalable systems that improve safety, quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

Production Support & Operational Execution
  • Ensure timely delivery of CNC programs, tooling plans, fixtures, and setup documentation to support production schedules.
  • Provide hands-on technical troubleshooting and support for machinists, operators, and production leadership.
  • Establish and maintain standardized programming methods, feeds and speeds, and setup strategies to minimize downtime and variation.
  • Oversee fixture design, tooling selection, and engineering change activities to support high-mix and complex machining work.

Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of CNC programmers and manufacturing engineers.
  • Balance immediate production needs with long-term engineering initiatives and process improvements.
  • Foster strong cross-functional collaboration with Production, Quality, Planning, and Supply Chain teams.
  • Build a culture focused on accountability, technical excellence, continuous improvement, and problem-solving.

Process Development & Continuous Improvement
  • Develop and maintain standardized programming libraries, setup sheets, and engineering documentation.
  • Validate new CNC programs through simulation, prove-outs, and controlled production releases.
  • Drive reductions in setup time, cycle time, scrap, and machine downtime through lean principles and best practices.
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) by conducting manufacturability assessments and developing robust machining processes.

Business & Customer Engagement
  • Partner with Sales and Estimating to provide technical input for quoting, cost models, and lead times.
  • Represent Manufacturing Engineering in customer audits, technical reviews, and program meetings.
  • Deliver Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback to customers to improve quality, cost, and delivery performance.
  • Track and report engineering performance metrics, risks, and project status to leadership.


Qualifications

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7-10+ years of CNC programming and manufacturing engineering experience.
  • 3-5+ years of leadership experience in a contract manufacturing, job shop, or precision machining environment.

Technical Competencies
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Strong working knowledge of CNC machining processes, including multi-axis milling and turning, tooling systems, and GD&T.
  • Experience with automation, robotics, and digital manufacturing tools preferred.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and engineering document control.

Leadership & Professional Skills
  • Hands-on, results-driven leader with the ability to operate tactically and strategically.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills in fast-paced environments.
