Full Job Description
The Lab Supervisor is a professional licensed position that provides on-site supervision of all Clinical Laboratory activities to include: management of coverage/staffing and resources to maintain productivity, quality and overall performance of the Clinical Laboratory. The Lab Supervisor performs clinical laboratory testing and works closely with the Manager/Director of the service area to promote service quality based on accuracy and timeliness in reporting results.
QUALIFICATIONS
License /Certification
Required: CA Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
Experience
Required: Two years of clinical lab experience.
Preferred:
At least one year of experience as a CLS generalist in an acute care setting.
Scheduling/staffing experience in a laboratory setting.
Previous management experience in a clinical lab setting.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential
Oversees staff scheduling and coverage to ensure adequately skilled personnel are available at all times.
Coordinates daily technical operations of the shift/facility.
Identifies problems and pursues opportunities for improvement using creativity and innovation. Promotes teamwork in problem-solving and knows how to persist without alienating anyone to find a solution in the best interests of all parties.
Develops, maintains and monitors quality control and quality improvement programs.
Assures compliance with laws, regulations, policies, procedures and methods.
Maintains continued competence of professional, technical and supervisory skills.
Clinical Lab Scientist duties:
Performs any of the applicable tests in Chemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Hematology, Molecular, Coagulation, Serology, Urinalyses and Point of Care. Performs automated and manual analysis that requires a complex network of steps and variables. Oversees the inventory of reagents, controls, media and consumables to ensure the lab has adequate supplies at all times. Conducts required quality control and quality improvement procedures. Continually evaluates results of quality control. Assists in the implementation of new methods, procedures and equipment. Oversees the performance of comparison studies of precision, accuracy, linearity, cost and suitability on new or existing procedures. Documents results and reports them to the Laboratory Manager and/or Section Chief as needed. Maintains proficiency with the LIS (lab information system) and the reporting system to the 9super-user level. Orients and trains students and new employees. Gives lectures when requested. Provides bench instruction.
