Job Description

The Clinical Veterinarian plays a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and veterinary care within a dynamic research environment. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical and surgical support while partnering with research, operations, and compliance teams to promote ethical, humane, and regulatory-compliant animal care. The Clinical Veterinarian directly contributes to the success of the animal care and research program by safeguarding animal health, supporting scientific integrity, and fostering a culture of excellence.

Responsibilities

1. Provide exceptional veterinary medical care to support the health, well-being, and humane treatment of all animals within the program, in full compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
2. Oversee and ensure adherence to approved animal research protocols to include monitoring of animal procedures and collaboration with research staff to promote best practices.
3. Deliver clinical and surgical veterinary support across the animal care program, including diagnosis, treatment, preventive care, and post-procedural monitoring.
4. Ensure animal facilities, practices, and programs meet or exceed regulatory and accreditation standards related to animal research and welfare.
5. Develop, present, and lead training programs for staff and researchers on humane animal care, veterinary procedures, and regulatory requirements.
6. Partner with the Director and institutional health and safety officials to implement and execute animal health, biosafety, and occupational safety initiatives.
7. Serve as a trusted subject-matter expert and collaborator across multidisciplinary teams.
8. Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and continuous improvement of the animal care program.

2. Strong capability to conduct thorough clinical evaluations of animals and assess environmental and housing conditions.
3. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively educate, collaborate, and influence diverse stakeholders.
4. Commitment to animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and ethical research practices.

EDUCATION:

• Doctorate in veterinary sciences is required.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

• Must have a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.
• Board certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) is preferred.

Benefits Overview

UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Employees who work at least 20 hours a week, with an appointment of at least 4.5 months, are eligible for benefits.

Retirement - Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). Time Off - A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:

• Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
• Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.
• Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.
• Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year.
