As part of the Medical Oncology team at Hoag Memorial Hospital, Newport Beach, you'll give direct inpatient nursing care as per the California Nurse Practice Act, and in support of the mission of the Patient Care Services Division.

Being a Hoag Clinical Nurse means serving our community by using research and evidence-based outcomes and collaborating with members of your team to offer the highest level of care to those who depend on us.

Inside Hoag's Oncology Unit:

Hoag is a recognized leader in cancer care, offering the latest in diagnostic and treatment capabilities to the community. Our Medical Oncology unit features 33 beds, with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4 to 1:5 depending on patient mix. While 80 to 90 percent of our admissions are oncology patients, we also receive overflow patients from our various medical/surgical units. Opportunity to grow your skillset in the Oncology specialty and become Chemo-Certified.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate patient care across the spectrum of modern oncology services, including advanced diagnostic testing, eligibility screening for clinical trials
  • Deliver innovative treatment modalities in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to serve our community.
  • Administer chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, and supportive medications in accordance with safety protocols (e.g., ONS/ONS Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Standards).
  • Collaborate with oncologists, nurse navigators, pharmacists, social workers, palliative care, dietitians, and case managers.
  • Provide supportive, compassionate care to patients and families during transitions to palliative or hospice services, ensuring comfort, dignity, and emotional support throughout end-of-life processes.


Other duties include:
  • Assessing and documenting a complete physical assessment, nursing interventions, and teaching and discharge needs for patients assigned to each shift, utilizing documentation guidelines, Standards of Care and Pathway goals.
  • Communicating changes in the patient's condition to the Charge Nurse/Supervisor and the physician directing care, as well as pertinent information at shift report using the patient Plan of Care (POC).
  • Providing continuity of care through the implementation and utilization of the POC.
  • Responding to emergency situations in a timeframe appropriate to the needs of each patient.
  • Administering medications and intravenous therapy with the ability to assess the appropriate indication of dosing and effects of the medication administered.
  • Assessing the educational ability/level for the patient, incorporating available educational material into patient/significant other teaching and documenting understanding in the patient record.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Clinical Nurse I's at Magnet designated facilities only require a BSN or that a BSN program is started within one year of hire date and BSN degree is attained within two years of the starting the BSN program.

Required:
  • Active California RN License.
  • 2 years of nursing experience in a high-acuity setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification accredited from American Heart Association
  • ACLS certification accredited from American Heart Association
  • Successful completion of an EKG course
  • Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Provider Card required to administer chemotherapy


Preferred:
  • BSN
  • Oncology experience
  • Additional skills and knowledge of various equipment and software may be required.
  • Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Provider Card preferred


License Required

Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.

Certifications Required
  • All Clinical Nurse I's are required to have current BLS certification prior to clinical rotation.
  • Oncology: ACLS upon hire. Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Provider Card required to administer chemotherapy.
