JOB DESCRIPTION

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse III – MedSurg role provides direct patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act to assigned patients on Medical/Surgical units. The nurse collaborates with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure the delivery of safe, timely and appropriate quality patient care. This includes providing physical assessments, nursing interventions, pain management, medication administrations, specimen collection, meeting nutritional needs, and teaching and discharge needs of the patients assigned. Utilizes the nursing process based on evidence-based best practices to meet patient care needs. Evaluates and adjusts the nursing care process as necessary with consultation as needed, and confers with the appropriate resource personnel when making ethical/legal/medical dilemma decisions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additionally, the Clinical Nurse III meets the requirements outlined in the Clinical Ladder program respective to his/her department. The Clinical Nurse III demonstrates a commitment to hospital involvement and professional growth by participating in committees, attending related meetings, and presenting education projects and/or supplemental activities.

For Outpatient Treatment Infusion Centers (Oncology and Non-Oncology) Administers Chemotherapy/Biotherapy/Immunotherapy.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s of Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Three years’ nursing experience required.

Additional requirements for specific departments are as follows:

  • Advanced Brain and Spine Unit: Fulfills mandatory stroke education requirements per certification. Neurology and Neurosurgery telemetry experience preferred, including but not limited to: stroke, seizure, brain tumor/surgery, Parkinson’s, spinal surgery.
  • Acute Rehab: Experience in Functional Improvement Measure (FIM) preferred. Previous experience in rehab nursing preferred.
  • Cardiac Telemetry: Successful completion of Sub-Intensive, Intermediate, Progressive or Critical Care course/experience required. Successful completion of ECG test required. Fulfills mandatory stroke education requirements per certification agency.
  • Gamma Knife: Previous telemetry experience preferred including but not limited to PACU, ED, ICU/CCU, GI Lab units.
  • GI Lab: Moderate Sedation experience required. Previous GI nursing experience preferred.
  • Gyn/Urol: Medical/Surgical, Gyn/Urology experience preferred.
  • Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI): Experience in cardiac telemetry required. Three years’ experience in HVI area of specialty required.
  • Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI): Five years’ experience in orthopedic nursing. Successful completion of ECG test required.
  • Ortho Surgery Center: Successful completion of ECG test required. Two years clinical/management experience preferred.
  • Outpatient Treatment Centers: For Oncology Infusion, 3 years Oncology infusion experience required. For Non-Oncology Infusion, no experience required.
  • HHNB Interventional Radiology, CT Scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Main X-Ray: Interventional Radiology experience preferred. HHI Main X-Ray: Interventional Radiology and/or vascular access experience preferred. PICC Services: Ultrasound guided vascular access experience is preferred.
  • Radiation Oncology: Oncology experience required. Radiation Oncology experience preferred.
  • Surgical – 6 West: Experience in SUB-ICU required. Experience on Surgical-6 West unit preferred.
  • Telemetry: Previous Telemetry experience preferred.

License Required:

Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.

License Preferred:

Certifications Required

  • National Certification in specialty area.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) prior to clinical rotation.
  • Department specific certification requirements are as follows:
  • Acute Rehab: FIM certification.
  • Advanced Brain and Spine Unit: NIHSS and ACLS required upon hire.
  • Cardiac Telemetry: ACLS required upon hire. Completes annual stroke education per Hoag Hospital guidelines.
  • Chemical Dependency: CARN (certifiied addictions RN) or PCCN (progressive care certified nurse) required
  • Gamma Knife: ACLS required at hire.
  • GI Lab: ACLS required.
  • Gynecology/Urology: Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Provider Card required to administer chemotherapy on hire or within year of hire as designated by manager.
  • Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI): ACLS required upon hire. Completes annual stroke education per Hoag Hospital guidelines.
  • Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI): ACLS required.
  • Outpatient Treatment Centers: Infusion Oncology the Chemotherapy/biotherapy certification is required. ONSONCC. This certification is not required for Non-Oncology infusion.
  • Oncology: ACLS upon hire. Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Provider Card required to administer chemotherapy.
  • 1206d Oncology Specialty Clinic: BLS upon hire
  • Pulmonary/Sepsis: ACLS upon hire.
  • HHNB Interventional Radiology, CT Scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Main X-Ray: ACLS certification is required. PALS certification is required within 6 months of hire/transfer to department. NIHSS certification is required within 30 days of hire/transfer to department. Completes annual stroke education per organization requirements.
  • PICC Services: ACLS certification is required.
  • HHI Main X-Ray: ACLS certification is required.
  • Surgical (5 West and 6 West): ACLS required.
  • Telemetry: ACLS required.
  • Irvine Telemetry: ACLS; NIHSS certification required within 365 days of hire as designated by Manager
  • Radiation Oncology: ACLS and required within 60 days of hire. OCN required
  • Irvine Medical 6 Oncology: ACLS upon hire, ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course (ONS- Oncology Nursing Society) required within 24 months of hire
  • Irvine Med Surg 6 Digestive: ACLS upon hire

Certifications Preferred

  • Acute Rehab: Certified Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN) and NIHSS certification.
  • Advanced Brain and Spine Unit: CNRN &/or SCRN.
  • Cardiac Telemetry: PCCN.
  • Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI): PCCN.
  • Gamma Knife: PALS or ACN certication.
  • Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI): One of the following certifications: ONC, CNOR, CAPA, Nurse Practitioner, or CPAN certification.
  • HHNB Interventional Radiology, CT Scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Main X-Ray: CRN (Certified Radiology Nurse) is preferred.
  • HHI Main X-Ray: PALS certification is preferred. CRN (Certified Radiology Nurse) is preferred.
  • Outpatient Treatment Centers Infusion (Non-Oncology): Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification. ONSONCC
