OVERVIEW

This role provides clinical and operational leadership within the department, supporting safe, high-quality patient care while serving as a resource, mentor, and advocate for patients, families, and staff. The successful candidate will promote collaboration, support staff development, and help ensure effective day-to-day department operations.

ROLE
  • Provides clinical leadership and serves as a professional role model, mentor, and resource to nurses, students, medical staff, and other members of the health care team.
  • Collaborates with patients, families, physicians, and interprofessional teams to promote patient-centred care, patient rights, advocacy, and positive outcomes.
  • Coordinates care for complex patients and supports effective discharge planning, including collaboration with Ontario Health atHome (OH[redacted]), Discharge Planners, and participation in ALC rounds and bed allocation processes.
  • Provides leadership and support during changes in patient acuity, workload, or department needs, including responding to urgent situations, codes, traumas, and providing frontline clinical support as required.
  • Supports staff orientation, onboarding, mentorship, education, and ongoing development, including monitoring orientation requirements and facilitating education related to new processes, equipment, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversees daily staffing and scheduling activities to support appropriate coverage, assignments, delegation, and workload management, including addressing scheduling concerns and assigning after-hours Team Lead responsibilities.
  • Promotes quality and patient safety through chart audits, quality huddles, departmental inspections, emergency preparedness activities, policy compliance, and participation in code debriefings and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Supports effective department operations through oversight of supplies and stores, delegation of duties, monitoring of resources, and identification of operational issues that may impact patient care or budget.
  • Builds collaborative relationships across the organization, facilitates communication between frontline staff and leadership, and contributes frontline expertise to committees, projects, policy development, and organizational planning.
  • Addresses concerns and resolves conflict in a timely and professional manner, supports staff, facilitates innovative solutions to practice issues, and communicates emerging issues, risks, and opportunities to the Manager.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current certificate of registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • 3 years current Medical-Surgical Nursing and/or Obstetrical Care Nursing experience
  • Previous experience as a Team Leader or formal Clinical Leadership role
  • Current certification in BLS, WHMIS, Fire Safety and Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)
  • Current certifications in NRP and Fetal Heart Monitoring
  • Excellent computer skills having worked with Microsoft Office Word and Excel
  • Hands on expertise and knowledge of Cerner
  • OHA Leadership courses/certifications desired

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Location: Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH) located in Huntsville. Applicants must reside within 125km of one of our hospital campuses or be willing to relocate prior to starting. *Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis

Hours of Work: Regular hours of work are Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 3:30 pm. Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements per the collective agreement.
