Job Description

To perform test procedures in routine hematology, special hematology, routine coagulation, special coagulation, bone marrow/special stain section, gram stain, COVID and urinalysis. Must be able to work in a high volume, automated setting. Transcribes and reports test results, and operates laboratory equipment as needed. Follows established quality control procedures and participates in all associated tasks in the section. The test menu will vary depending on the shift.

Responsibilities

Task A:

Perform Hematology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis Procedures (80%)

1. Perform all procedures that are assigned to your shift in an accurate and efficient manner.
2. Learn and perform new procedures in a reasonable time frame.
3. Follow step by step procedures. Any deviation from the procedure must be reviewed with a supervisor prior to sending any results.
4. Be responsible for procedural updates by reviewing procedures on a bi-annual basis, and by reading and initialing all meeting notes.
5. Complete test procedures and transmit results in the laboratory computer system within established turn around times (TATs).
6. Call panic value results to unit or MD within 30 minutes of test completion and document with appropriate English Text Code.
7. Report abnormal results, as indicated in the procedures, to supervisor and/or resident in a timely manner.
8. Label specimens, reagents and worksheets in a legible and neat manner with ink pen.
9. Legibly record the results of manual tests on worksheets in ink. Worksheets must be signed or initialed.
10. Manually enter test results that are not transmitted by on-line instruments within 30 minutes.
11. Communicate across shifts in regards to patient and instrument problems, and pending tests. Follow Hand Off Procedure.
12. Complete required training and competency assessment within the assigned time frames.
13. Maintain a clean and neat work area. Replenish supplies and prepare reagents as needed.
14. Wears buttoned lab coat, gloves and uses face protection when handling patient samples. Refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in the work area.
15. Take full responsibility for errors when committed, notifies required personnel and completes appropriate documentation.
16. Must not exceed seven errors per year that result in corrections.
17. Must not exceed three labeling events per year.
18. Evening and night shift technologists must initial the work station calendar daily.

Task B:

Maintain & troubleshoot all equipment used in Hematology (10%)

1. Be able to initiate troubleshooting of any instrument when a malfunction occurs.
2. Notify the first available day shift supervisor of malfunction. If no supervisor on site, and if an instrument cannot be used until repaired, attaches Repair Tag or Out of Service tag, and sends email to Hematology staff alerting them to the status.
3. Perform maintenance on equipment as assigned or instructed by a supervisor or specialist.
4. Initial Maintenance Logs after performing maintenance procedures.
5. Record malfunction and corrective action in service log books. Notifies supervisor and/or Hem staff via email of pending service calls.

Task C:

Analyze designated quality control material with all procedures (5%)

1. Analyze required quality control material for all procedures.
2. Record QC results on worksheet and/or in computer.
3. Repeat test if controls are outside the posted control range.
4. Notify a supervisor whenever results of assays on QC materials are out-of-range.
5. Complete analysis of proficiency testing material within stated turn-around-time.

Task D:

Perform additional duties, projects, and/or special assignments when requested. (5%)

1. Collect sample at patient bedside when required by the procedure.
2. Initiates Laboratory Problem Reports to document complaints, errors, injuries and/or variances from standard procedure.

Complete projects or studies within the agreed upon time period.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• BS or BA with CLS degree
• Able to work and get along with a diverse group of staff members
• Willingness to contribute to the betterment of the lab

Preferred Qualifications:

• Recent experience in clinical laboratory technology, preferably in Hematology
• Experience in a high volume laboratory, doing clinical laboratory testing
• Experience with current automation used in the clinical laboratory (preferably Hematology)
• Experience using laboratory information systems and up-to-date computer skills

Required Licenses/Certifications:

• California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or
• California Clinical Hematologist Scientist

Salary Information

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
