What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about editing, writing and communications in technical, mission-driven environments? Do you enjoy both technical editing and creating communications products for senior leaders? Do you thrive in a team environment? If so, we invite you to apply for the position of Technical Writer and Editor to join our dynamic team at Sandia National Labs.

Role Responsibilities: In this role, you will provide essential support to management and engineers. You will be matrixed to provide dedicated support to specific programmatic areas across various projects.   • Support leaders with high-visibility slides and effective PowerPoint presentations
  • Drive, plan and lead effective communication opportunities for technical leadership
  • Champion Sandia's brand, look and feel across communication products, partnering with other writers, creative teams and communication professionals across the Labs.
  • Translate technical stories into understandable communications to employees and stakeholders in the form of memos, slides and presentations.
  • Capture program accomplishments and produce reports and presentations.
  • Ensure that requirements are met, and that documentation is clear, concise, and understandable to its intended audience, both present and future.
  • Create uniform approaches, educate, and assist customers, and collaborate with coworkers.
  • Write, edit, or rewrite technical articles, publications, manuals, presentations, and other materials to communicate technical procedures, research findings, and developments clearly and effectively to a variety of internal and external audiences.
  • Acquire or verify subject knowledge by interviewing subjects, observing experiments or production processes, and referring to Realization Product Procedures (RPPs), engineering drawings, training materials, and program documentation.
  • Exercise quality control over documents intended for external distribution and interpret and coordinate documentation and communication policies and procedures.
  • Complete documentation configuration and records management.
  • Effectively partner with Technical Writers/Editors and Information Management team members to serve the needs of the customers you support, providing line technical writing support.


Salary Range

$87,400 - $168,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Journalism, Creative Writing or a relevant field, plus a minimum of 5 years of related experience in technical writing and editing; or equivalent experience and achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job.
  • Proven experience translating highly technical information into clear business and employee communications.
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Proven customer service skills.
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q-level security clearance.


Qualifications We Desire

About Our Team

Department 3245 is part of the 3240 Knowledge Management Office at Sandia Labs. 3245 supports ND, mission-centric technical writing/editing and information management needs. Technical Editors and Information Managers are a team proving high quality matrixed support to national security programs at Sandia.

Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. About Sandia National Laboratories

The Sandia National Laboratories is one of three National Nuclear Security Administration research and development laboratories in the United States, managed and operated privately by the National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia. Their primary mission is to develop, engineer, and test the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons and high technology.
