What Your Job Will Be LikeThe Telemetry (TM) team at Sandia National Laboratories is excited to invite an R&D Electrical Engineer to join our innovative and collaborative team! Our mission encompasses the design, development, testing, and qualification of a diverse range of telemetry products within the ND portfolio.
In this role, you will take charge of designing, testing, and verifying requirements for printed wiring boards (PWBs) / printed circuit boards (PCBs), ensuring their seamless integration into the broader TM product ecosystem. This role will include benchtop as well as assembly level testing at the telemetry and system levels. You will also collaborate with fabrication vendors to procure PWBs/PCBs and manage all associated design documentation. Success in this position hinges on your ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary engineering team. As an electrical design engineer, you will also engage with other stakeholders and product teams throughout the entire Nuclear Security Enterprise.
On any given day, you may:
- Design schematics, optimize layouts, and work with ECAD to finalize designs
- Present designs at schematic reviews and peer reviews
- Write test plans or test reports
- Conduct modeling and simulations to validate your designs
- Contribute to electrical interface requirements development with systems teams
- Coordinate design efforts with the mechanical and firmware teams
- Support mechanical and environmental testing and troubleshoot in the lab as issues arise
- Participate in lab testing of individual printed wiring assemblies or completed Telemetry systems
- Manage procurement processes with vendors to bring your designs to life
The position requires an ability to travel up to 25% to support the mission.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time at the Livermore, CA facility.

Salary Range$139,900 - $280,600
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Position requires an active DOE L-level security clearance or equivalent to start and the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We DesireThe ideal R&D S&E Electrical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
- Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Demonstrated experience in designing electronic Printed Wiring Boards and Printed Wiring Assemblies (PWA).
- Proficiency in testing and debugging circuitry using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/spectrum analyzers, and function/pulse generators.
- Strong design skills and familiarity with tools such as Mentor Graphics/ Siemens Electronic Design Automation, Altium Designer, and Hyperlynx Power and Signal Integrity
- Hands-on experience with electrical benchtop testing and support for environmental testing
- Demonstrated strong documentation related to product development within a quality management system
- Mentorship and leadership ability
- Strong, methodical approach to problem-solving
- Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or relevant technical field, with at least 4 years' relevant experience.
- Active DOE Q-Level Security Clearance or other transferable U.S. Government Clearance.
- Ability to work well in a collaborative and dynamic team environment.
About Our TeamOrganization 8468, Telemetry Engineering 6 - along with sister departments 8436, 8434, 8437, 8462 and 8465 and has responsibility for the design, development, and qualification of weapon system instrumentation (or telemetry systems) for use in Joint Test Assemblies (JTAs) for the entire US nuclear arsenal. The JTA program is a cornerstone of the Stockpile Evaluation Program and allows critical assessment of the weapon system, DoD platform, and support personnel performance. To fulfill its mission responsibilities, Organization 8468 employs a diverse and talented group of electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, system engineers and technologists. The Organization collaborates with other NW groups within Sandia and across the Nuclear Weapons Complex, including NNSA, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the production agencies (National Security Center and Pantex), and the DoD. Organization 08468 is also expected to have significant interactions with other DOE Laboratories and other NNSA entities (beyond the NW Complex), the DoD, and other government agencies.
