What Your Job Will Be LikeThe Digital Design, Verification, and Embedded Software Manager leads development of multiple embedded applications supporting 5350's Arming, Fuzing, and Controller components for the Nation's nuclear deterrent. These designs are typically prototyped in commercial FPGAs for test and risk reduction, and then transitioned to Sandia's Microsystems Engineering, Science & Applications (MESA) for physical design and manufacturing. The manager leads the embedded software team for advanced processor-based designs and provides leadership for both hardware and software verification. The department also develops new capabilities to improve adaptability and flexibility through technology maturation efforts.
This work is executed in close coordination with major component Project Realization Teams, including budgeting, scheduling, and requirements definition. The 5351 team supports qualification of embedded components and the higher-level assemblies into which they are integrated.
The 5351 manager is the primary leader for developing new controller components. As Sandia increases emphasis on rapid demonstration and deployment, the manager is expected to evolve the department to meet faster delivery expectations; often by forming new teams and operating effectively in ambiguous environments to deliver products against emerging and urgent customer needs.
On any given day, one may be called upon to:
- Build and strengthen the team to include hiring, professional development, and performance management
- Lead department-level planning and communication to customers and partners
- Understand the work of the organization and connect the work and expertise of staff with potential beneficiaries, collaborators, and customers
- Build trust-based relationships to ensure that customer needs are satisfied
- Apply organization knowledge and experience to independently judge work quality, performance, and alignment of results with customer expectations
- Provide oversight and guidance on the security for work within the department
- Ensure safe operations of department staff
- Engage technically across the department to understand and represent the work
- Partner with other 5350 component managers and leads for design and delivery of ASICs to support Arming, Fuzing, and Controller major components
- Some travel is required for this position.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite.
Salary Range$163,700 - $278,000
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Active DOE Q security clearance or equivalent (e.g. DOW Top Secret)
Qualifications We DesireThe ideal Manager, R&D Science & Engineering candidate will in addition possess the following
- Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
- A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or PhD.).
- Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Experience in digital design, particularly focused on high consequence, high reliability applications
- Demonstrated success leading teams to meet cost, performance, and schedule requirements
- Leadership experience as a Level 1 manager
- Ability to obtain and maintain SCI access, which may require a polygraph test
- NW product development experience
- Embedded software development experience
- Experience with verification processes utilizing Universal Verification Methodology, Formal Verification, and hardware validation
About Our TeamThe Digital Design & Verification Department is responsible for development and qualification of the logic that manages the arming and fuzing functions for the nation's nuclear deterrent. The department specializes in digital circuit design and verification, as well as the integrating software to control and test real-time embedded systems. Personnel play a key role in research, development, and maturation of advanced technologies for next-generation weapon systems.
