What Your Job Will Be Like

The Digital Design, Verification, and Embedded Software Manager leads development of multiple embedded applications supporting 5350's Arming, Fuzing, and Controller components for the Nation's nuclear deterrent. These designs are typically prototyped in commercial FPGAs for test and risk reduction, and then transitioned to Sandia's Microsystems Engineering, Science & Applications (MESA) for physical design and manufacturing. The manager leads the embedded software team for advanced processor-based designs and provides leadership for both hardware and software verification. The department also develops new capabilities to improve adaptability and flexibility through technology maturation efforts.

This work is executed in close coordination with major component Project Realization Teams, including budgeting, scheduling, and requirements definition. The 5351 team supports qualification of embedded components and the higher-level assemblies into which they are integrated.

The 5351 manager is the primary leader for developing new controller components. As Sandia increases emphasis on rapid demonstration and deployment, the manager is expected to evolve the department to meet faster delivery expectations; often by forming new teams and operating effectively in ambiguous environments to deliver products against emerging and urgent customer needs.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:
  • Build and strengthen the team to include hiring, professional development, and performance management
  • Lead department-level planning and communication to customers and partners
  • Understand the work of the organization and connect the work and expertise of staff with potential beneficiaries, collaborators, and customers
  • Build trust-based relationships to ensure that customer needs are satisfied
  • Apply organization knowledge and experience to independently judge work quality, performance, and alignment of results with customer expectations
  • Provide oversight and guidance on the security for work within the department
  • Ensure safe operations of department staff
  • Engage technically across the department to understand and represent the work
  • Partner with other 5350 component managers and leads for design and delivery of ASICs to support Arming, Fuzing, and Controller major components
  • Some travel is required for this position.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite.

Salary Range

$163,700 - $278,000

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

About Sandia National Laboratories

The Sandia National Laboratories is one of three National Nuclear Security Administration research and development laboratories in the United States, managed and operated privately by the National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia. Their primary mission is to develop, engineer, and test the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons and high technology. Headquartered on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it also has a campus in Livermore, California, next to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and a test facility in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii. It is Sandia's mission to maintain the reliability and surety of nuclear weapon systems, conduct research and development in arms control and nonproliferation technologies, and investigate methods for the disposal of the United States' nuclear weapons program's hazardous waste. Other missions include research and development in energy and environmental programs, as well as the surety of critical national infrastructures. In addition, Sandia is home to a wide variety of research including computational biology, mathematics, materials science, alternative energy, psychology, MEMS, and cognitive science initiatives. Sandia formerly hosted ASCI Red, one of the world's fastest supercomputers until its decommission in 2006, and now hosts ASCI Red Storm, originally known as Thor's Hammer. Sandia is also home to the Z Machine. The Z Machine is the largest X-ray generator in the world and is designed to test materials in conditions of extreme temperature and pressure. It is operated by Sandia National Laboratories to gather data to aid in computer modeling of nuclear weapons. In December 2016, it was announced that National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, under the direction of Honeywell International, would take over the management of Sandia National Laboratories starting on May 1, 2017. Educational opportunities are conducted in collaboration with university students through several programs, including the Securing Top Academic Research & Talent at Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and the Sandia University Partnerships Network.
