Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Civil Engineer II to support engineering studies in the Capital Programs division of Water Resources. This position performs engineering computations and data collection for water resources projects of flood control, water supply, recreation and environmental enhancements. We welcome all qualified candidates to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Under general supervision, performs moderately difficult engineering duties in support of projects involving such elements as: flood control, drainage, water supply and demand, low flow augmentation, irrigation, stream restoration,and recreation analysis.
  • Performs preliminary field surveys and inspections for proposed projects.
  • Participates in engineering training programs which develop engineering expertise and computer skills; and develops an understanding of engineering policies and procedures.
  • Maintains project files to document computations and project evaluations.
  • Develops working relations with OWR employees, and other department and non-department contacts.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of work of the duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from a college or university program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
  • Requires two years of experience in civil or water resource engineering; or one year of engineering experience as a Civil Engineer I and completion of an agency approved training program.

Charged with preserving, protecting and promoting Illinois' natural and cultural resources, Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) employees oversee water, wildlife, wetlands and oil wells, parks, historic sites - and everything in between. The Office of Water Resources

The Office of Water Resources administers regulatory programs over construction in the flood ways of rivers, lakes, and streams. It is also responsible for construction in the shore waters of Lake Michigan, construction and operation of dams, construction in public bodies of water, and diversion of water from Lake Michigan, and withdrawal of water from three Federal lakes (Shelbyville, Carlyle, and Rend Lakes). The Office serves as the lead State agency for water resource planning, navigation, floodplain management, the National Flood Insurance program, and interstate organizations on water resources.
