Chief Medical Officer-Duke Health Lake Norman
Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital is recruiting a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide senior physician leadership for its hospital campus, facilitating effective collaboration among the medical staff, hospital administration, Duke University Health System leadership, and the governing board. The CMO will be accountable for advancing safe, high-quality, patient-centered care consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Duke University Health System and Duke Health Lake Norman. This role has executive oversight for both Quality & Safety and the Medical Staff Office.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a working knowledge of applicable national, state, and local laws and regulations, including Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements affecting the medical staff, allied health professionals, quality, safety, credentialing, and hospital operations
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein
- Provide executive leadership for Duke Health Lake Norman in the areas of medical staff affairs, quality and safety, clinical performance, regulatory readiness, patient experience, and strategic alignment with Duke University Health System
- Oversee, direct, and support medical management decisions that advance quality outcomes, patient safety, operational effectiveness, and organizational priorities
- Serve as the primary liaison between Duke Health Lake Norman administration, the entity medical staff, Duke University Health System leadership, and the governing board
- Provide direct oversight of the Quality & Safety function and the Medical Staff Office, ensuring strong alignment between clinical quality priorities, medical staff governance, credentialing, privileging, peer review, and regulatory compliance
- Monitor effectiveness of management practices and key performance indicators using data such as quality and safety outcomes, regulatory findings, patient experience, physician and staff engagement, budget variance, turnover, absenteeism, and other operational metrics
- Participate in professional organizations and represent Duke Health Lake Norman in a professional, competent manner in the community
Demonstrate effective leadership skills through delegation, organization, and coordination of intra-departmental activities and inter-departmental integration - Assures the ongoing development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of medical staff services, quality and safety programs, space needs, equipment, personnel, and other resources as needed
- Assess and communicate recommendations for utilization of space and resources
- Prepare and submit reports as necessary in an accurate and timely manner
- Serve as liaison with external parties and institutions, including public, governmental, regulatory, accrediting, and Duke University Health System entities
- Oversee and manage on-site inspections, assist inspectors and surveyors in the performance of their duties, and provide follow-up reports as required
- Develop effective processes for staff development, engagement, and retention
- Ensure medical staff appointments and allied health privileges are compliant with sound credentialing practices
- Oversee preparation of agendas and materials for the Medical Executive Committee and other medical staff committees
Minimal Requirements
- MD or DO degree with an unrestricted medical license
- Board certification in medical management
- Seven or more years of clinical practice
- Leadership experience in medical staff organizations and/or health care delivery systems
- Three to five years of management experience
- Excellent analytical skills
- Excellent written and oral skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals of all backgrounds, experience, and education levels
