Summary

This position is located in the Design Office, Center for Exhibits and Interpretation (CEI), Chief of Staff, Office of the Librarian. The incumbent of this position is responsible for planning the work of the Design and Printing Office, evaluating and recommending purchase of equipment and materials required; space requirements; and staffing. The incumbent is responsible for the printing, composing, editorial, design and graphic needs of the Library.

As the Chief, Design and Printing Office, you will:

  • Provide administrative and technical supervision relative to the staff supervised.
  • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
  • Establish guidelines and performance expectations for staff and clearly communicate these through the formal employee performance management system.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to program operating officials in the planning stages of printing projects on matters relating to cost effectiveness; interpretations of regulations and policies; and development of print formats.
  • Evaluate the production program, observe the need for the change or adaptation of procedures, and recommend such changes.
  • Oversee the organization, development, and implementation of multiple interactive components of both on-site and traveling exhibitions.
  • Direct the design, programming, and technical support of interactive activities for visitors and patrons.
  • Serve as a liaison with the GPO.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • The incumbent of this position will work a Flexitime work schedule.
  • This is a supervisory, non-bargaining unit position.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid at step one of the grade.

In addition, per Library of Congress Regulation 9-532, an appointee or internal selectee is subject to a one-year supervisory probationary period if this is their first supervisory/managerial position at the Library of Congress. Probationary periods served at other Federal agencies do not count toward this requirement.

The Library of Congress may offer repayment for all or part of federally insured student loans. However, not all service units within the Library of Congress participates in the repayment of federally insured student loans. Therefore, determination to repay a federally insured student loan is subject to approval by the appropriate service unit.
