Job Description

U. S. Steel has an immediate opening for a Shift Manager I for the Clairton Chemical Laboratory. The Chemical Laboratory Manager is responsible for laboratory operations and environmental compliance functions and oversees analysts performing environmental, quality and process control sample analyses. This is a PA DEP accredited laboratory under 25 Pa. Code Chapter 252 and the facility maintains ISO 9001/14001/45001 certifications. The manager maintains audit-ready documentation including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Safety Job Procedures (SJPs), and Quality Operating Procedures (QOPs), ensuring all training documents and records are current, accessible, and audit-ready. This role serves as the primary laboratory liaison between the Environmental, Quality, Raw Materials and Operations departments.

The Successful Candidate Will:
  • Demonstrate strong personnel management skills and hold direct reports accountable for their conduct and performance
  • Maintain a strong leadership presence while managing a large, diverse team
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation systems that withstand regulatory scrutiny
  • Communicate effectively across departments and with external auditors/regulators
  • Balance administrative and operational responsibilities
  • Foster a safety-first culture while maintaining productivity and customer service
  • Adapt quickly to changing business priorities
  • Exhibit strong organizational skills with ability to manage competing priorities to meet customer needs

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain an environment of continuous employee accountability and equity
  • Directly supervise, schedule, and manage laboratory analysts across multiple shifts
  • Conduct performance evaluations, administer corrective actions, and support employee development
  • Oversee laboratory training including onboarding, method-specific training, and continuing education training for all direct reports
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement
  • Maintain laboratory health & safety compliance and evaluations, participate/lead incident investigations
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with all applicable procedures
  • Participate in facility-wide safety programs
  • Perform quality management system functions and maintain raw materials and product data
  • Prepare for PA DEP accreditation and ISO certification audits and lead audit follow-ups
  • Investigate and document non-conformances and corrective actions
  • Oversee coke, coal, and environmental sample analysis supporting production quality and permit compliance
  • Coordinate daily laboratory workflow and sample priorities to meet production and regulatory deadlines
  • Manage instrument/equipment calibration and maintenance
  • Serve as primary laboratory liaison to Environmental, Raw Materials, Process, and Quality departments
  • Prepare and deliver monthly reports and quality updates to facility leadership
  • Maintain all laboratory records and documentation

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in operations management, an engineering discipline, engineering technology, chemistry, chemical technology or a related field
  • Prior management experience required; experience managing teams of 10+ strongly preferred
  • Experience managing bargaining unit/wage employees preferred
  • Experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting preferred
  • Proficiency in technical writing
  • Proficient in basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, etc.)
