Description
The College of Educations and Human Development invites qualified candidates to submit an application for consideration to fill the position of Division Chair, Education and Leadership in theDivision of Education and Leadershipat Governors State University. The Division Chair provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the academic unit, ensuring program quality, faculty development, operational efficiency, and student success. The Chair is accountable to the Dean of the College and collaborates extensively with Associate Provosts and university offices, and faculty to align departmental priorities with institutional goals. This is a 12-month, full-time, tenured faculty administrative appointment.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Academic & Faculty Affairs (30%)
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, promotion, and evaluation of all faculty categories (Unit A, Unit B lecturers, adjuncts, and visiting professors) in accordance with HR processes and the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
- Conduct annual faculty evaluations and classroom observations and ensure all evaluations comply with CBA timelines and processes.
- Coordinate equitable workload assignments, course scheduling, and section management, and make adjustments such as adding or cancelling sections as necessary.
- Review new course and program proposals and work closely with new program or certificate originators to refine submissions. Guide approved proposals through the college and university curriculum review processes and ensure alignment with the Academic Master Plan (AMP) process.
- Ensure curricular quality, coherence, and accreditation alignment.
- Promote and maintain a culture of collegiality, inclusion, professionalism, and shared governance within the department/division.

- Organize and facilitate regular department/division faculty meetings to support these values and advance academic priorities.
2. Operational, Administrative & Technology Management (25%)
- Propose and manage the department/division budget; assist the Dean in the preparation of college-level budgets.
- Supervise, evaluate, and support administrative support staff; oversee the hiring, onboarding, and supervision of graduate assistants.
- Oversee workflow management, ensure timely completion of required reports, and ensure accurate records of faculty accomplishments.
- Utilize institutional technology solutions such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (e.g., Colleague), data extraction and reporting solutions (e.g., Webi), learning management systems (LMS) (e.g., Blackboard), and faculty evaluation solutions (e.g., Faculty Success) for operations, reporting, and compliance.
- Coordinate college- and department/division-specific onboarding processes for new faculty and staff, complementing (not duplicating) university-level onboarding conducted by HR and university-wide onboarding led by the Provost's Office.
- Collaborate with Associate Provosts and other administrative units on operational initiatives, enrollment management, and process improvements, ensuring full adherence to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in all matters relating to direct reports, including workload assignments, evaluations, and grievance procedures.
- Leverage periodic enrollment for forecasting staffing, resource planning, and course scheduling needs.
3. Student Support & Academic Quality (15%)
- Address student concerns, grievances, and grade appeals in accordance with university policies.
- Partner with academic advisors and faculty to enhance student retention, persistence, and success.
- Collaborate with university units (e.g., Office of the Provost, Academic Resource Center, University Academic Advising Center, Graduate College) on strategies to reduce DFW rates and support student success.
- Encourage and facilitate student usage of academic support services such as the Tutoring, Career Services, Academic Advising, and other student success programs.
- Engage in student recruitment and retention initiatives by prospecting for new students, participating in graduate program application review and admissions processes, and building applicant pipelines.
- Support Graduate Academic Advisors by participating in open houses, information sessions, and other recruitment activities for prospective graduate students.
- Monitor enrollment trends, course evaluations, and other student feedback to inform academic and operational decisions.
4. Accreditation, Assessment & Strategic Engagement (10%)
- Lead accreditation and reaccreditation processes for department/division programs, including preparation of self-studies and coordination of site visits.
- Implement and monitor program assessment plans, use outcomes data for continuous improvement, and align initiatives with institutional assessment priorities.
- Work with Deans and the Office of the Provost to align departmental academic planning and accreditation activities with institutional strategic plans.
- Engage in strategic planning and academic governance at the college level.
5. Service & Representation (10%)
- Serve on department/division, college, and, as appropriate, on university/Faculty Senate committees.
- Represent the Dean, college, or department/division at university, community, and professional events.
- Participate in open houses and outreach events targeting potential students as a representative of the department/division.
- Foster relationships with alumni, feeder institutions, community partners, advisory boards, and external organizations to advance the mission of the academic unit and the institution.
6. Teaching, Scholarly Activities, Mentoring, and Grant Work (10%)
- Teach up to two courses annually or as assigned at the discretion of the Dean.
- Maintain involvement in scholarly or professional activities to remain discipline-current.
- Mentor junior faculty and students, supporting career development, promotion, and tenure preparation, teaching effectiveness, and research productivity.
- Engage in grant writing and externally funded projects that benefit the department/division and institution.
Other Responsibilities
- Serve as hiring manager for adjunct and visiting faculty as needed.
- Ensure accuracy in adjunct pay, overload, summer pay, and reappointment rosters.
- Post and review job postings for faculty searches in coordination with Human Resources.
- Promote academic excellence through quality assurance, continuous improvement, and collegial leadership.

Required Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in education, educational leadership, special education, or related discipline from a recognized accredited institution.
  • A record of research and scholarship appropriate for appointment as an associate professor or professor in accordance with the Division Criteria for tenure and promotion.
  • Demonstrated experience in faculty leadership, budget management, accreditation, and collective bargaining environments.
  • Proficiency with institutional technology solutions such as ERP systems, LMS platforms, data reporting solutions, and faculty evaluation solutions.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence, scholarly achievement, mentoring success, and commitment to shared governance and student recruitment and success. Current knowledge of research and trends of teacher preparation and/or school leadership preparation.
  • A record of obtaining grants and/or donations
  • Experience in assessment and accreditation (i.e., NCATE/CAEP)
