This role is considered Hybrid, which means the employee will work 2-3 days onsite at a Company designated location and occasionally from home.

Position Summary

The CG Technology Supervisors work under direction of the global Head of CG, and in partnership with the Pipeline Strategy & Workflow team to oversee the development, implementation, and communication of best practices for the execution of CG techniques and workflows. They work closely with the Heads of Department and Studio Leadership in their studio, along with the other studios, to understand overall pipeline and department needs and challenges, that then feed into the overall development priorities. They are key to ensuring ILM continues to push the boundaries of VFX.

Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Global Supervision and Planning
  • Work with local HoDs and Studio Leadership to identify current department and pipeline bottlenecks and inefficiencies that will feed into the overall prioritization and roadmapping process.
  • Represent the local studio priorities at the global level for technology and workflow planning efforts.
  • Ensure the local studio CG and R&D teams are aware of the global plans and priorities and the reasons behind decisions in partnership with the Pipeline Workflow team; evangelize the decisions within the local studio.
  • Actively participate in the global prioritization processes; be part of the team proposing what shows and problems our development resources will focus on.
  • Assist with guiding and coordinating collaboration with key Disney partners including Disney Research, Pixar and Disney Animation.
  • Act as bridge between shows, departments and tech.
  • Foster and model global communication and collaboration.


Bidding/Pre-Production
  • Assist in establishing teams for tests; ensure they are making maximum use of the studio's tools to showcase our capabilities in the best possible way.


Shows
  • Guide shows through the show CG lifecycle ensuring they follow global standards and best practices; communicate show progression to global show teams.
  • Work with the show CG Supervisor to develop the show approach plan; ensure there is a manageable amount of risk in the plan; make shows aware of new tools/tech during initial planning.
  • Ensure show leadership teams understand their responsibilities for triage and support, the studio responsibilities and the global development team responsibilities; work with the show leadership team (CG and Production) to ensure the show is appropriately staffed for triage and support.
  • Assist the show leadership with crewing and casting as necessary.
  • Identify high value shows and work to make the case for above normal development and technology investment to be made.
  • Track show progress with the CG supervisor; ensure issues are escalated when necessary, and that achievements are shared globally across shows.
  • In partnership with Pipeline Strategy & Workflow team, as well as Prod Tech Leadership, review post-show reviews; work with global CG, Production and Technology Leadership to help create improvement plans.


R&D
  • Partner with Pipeline Strategy & Workflow team to understand long-term roadmap goals and priorities, and enforce those development plans for the dept they oversee.
  • For certain key initiatives, act as product owner for key development projects and technologies ensuring the artist viewpoint is properly represented; provide expert input to development as appropriate.
  • As appropriate, partner with engineering and discipline experts to investigate new tools and techniques to push creative capabilities to new levels.
  • As directed by the Head of CG, participate in regular project status reviews to ensure development is on track and aligned with roadmap plans.


CG
  • Run the local CG Supervisor and HoD meetings to ensure workflow, technology and resource knowledge and experience is shared across shows and studios; actively participate in the global meetings when meeting times permit.
  • Lead cross studio per-discipline HoD/Supe/Lead meetings as delegated by the Head of CG to ensure the global area leads are in regular communication and working together to enforce canonical workflows and techniques.
  • Assist Talent Managers and HoDs with crewing decisions as required.
  • Assist training departments and HoDs in developing relevant material as needed.


Studios
  • Partner with local Studio Leadership to assist on any local challenges, issues or planning needs.
  • Assist the Studio Technology Leads with budget planning; ensure they understand the global development priorities and trends, and plan appropriately for the year ahead.
  • Partner with local Digital Resource Manager and shows to assist with ongoing resource usage monitoring, as well as projections, for proc, storage, desktop and GPU resources.
  • Assist with recruiting/interviews as needed.


Vendors
  • Actively work to maintain strong vendor relationships; ensure vendors are aware of what is important to us.
  • Keep up with plans and roadmaps and ensure they are communicated to the local and global teams; work to positively influence their roadmaps to complement our priorities.
  • Own the local studio support process; coordinate and prioritize local support requests and communicate globally.
  • In partnership with the Pipeline Strategy & Workflow team, actively seek new vendors and tools; communicate findings internally (globally) and help setup evaluations.


Job Requirements

Education / Experience:
  • Bachelor degree in relevant discipline or equivalent industry experience
  • 5+ years as a lead within CG (Area lead or CG Supervisor)
  • 10+ years experience in visual effects as a technical artist
  • Experience working for a global company and working with teams in many time zones


Required Skills / Competencies:
  • Expert level understanding of the visual effects process
  • Expert level understanding of the ILM pipeline
  • Expert level understanding of one or more of Maya, Nuke, Houdini
  • Expert level understanding of the techniques and tools of one or more CG discipline
  • Thorough understanding and appreciation of the software development process
  • Track record of delivering high quality work on high end visual effects projects
  • Creative and innovative thinker; ability to look at problems with a fresh perspective and create new solutions
  • Experience managing vendor relationships

  • Strong people management skills, with the ability to inspire and mentor
  • Ability to work collaboratively with non-technical employees across the organization and at all levels
